Legal Market Madrid 2026: Firms, Pay and Hiring

Spanish elite and Magic Circle offices are still closing this year's hiring window. The same in-house general counsel seat is often a year late. Dated pay, the companies that pay it, and the two calendars behind both.

The 2026 legal market Madrid window.

The 2026 legal market Madrid is a split window. Across 250 structured interviews with Madrid in-house counsel and hiring lawyers, 72 of 88 respondents sitting as general counsel or head of legal at companies of more than 250 staff, over a 24-month window, told Sartori their last in-house replacement took more than twelve months from budget approval to start date. Elite Spanish and Magic Circle offices were filling the next academic year in the same window.

Lens 01 · Two clocks The firm book moved on 1 January. The public book has not sat its first paper.

Garrigues promoted 16 new equity partners effective 1 January 2026, taking the partnership to 370, with 133 other career-stage promotions the same day, per the firm’s 5 February 2026 announcement. The State Attorney convocatoria published in the BOE on 27 December 2025 offers 30 free-access posts, with the first exercise scheduled between September 2026 and January 2027. One book has already closed a cycle. The other has not begun it.

The dated 2026 dashboard sits under this decoder. Pay, buyers and the statutes each get one home below. Who earns the figure is unpacked in section 04.

02 Two calendars

The firm still closes. The company still waits.

Hiring in this city is split by calendar, not by mood. A general counsel who copies a firm campus date onto an in-house requisition has written the wrong clock onto the brief.

The firm book that still closes is already one academic cycle ahead of start date. Clifford Chance’s Madrid careers page and Pérez-Llorca’s own offer page were, in 2026, filling Máster de Acceso prácticas that start in September 2027, for the 2026/27 master’s course. Garrigues runs a permanently open process — Law degree, excellent English, three ranked practice and office preferences — and still converts that master’s practice into employed lawyers after the national exam. That is a known annual machine. It is why Spanish hiring at the firms still closes in 2026.

The same in-house seat is structurally slower. The February 2025 ICAM/GAD3 study is the anatomy of that slice, not a vacancy census. Of 96 lawyers in the same Sartori cohort sitting inside elite or Magic Circle Madrid offices over that 24-month window, 61 said the 2026 campus process was already converting into 2027 employed seats. A head of legal at a CNMV-supervised Madrid fund manager told us their counsel seat had been approved in principle for nine months while those offices were filling 2027. The company had a budget line. It did not have a statute that had yet hit its own P&L.

Sartori’s quarterly survey since 2019 finds, across eight Madrid in-house client waves in 2024–26, that six dated the last general counsel opening to a statute or a live transaction rather than to a planned retirement. That is the structural reason the same in-house seat can be a year late relative to a firm that still closes: the company waits for the instrument to bite; the firm hires against the academic year. Public A1 seats sit on an even slower oposición clock. The Comunidad de Madrid allocated 74 of 507 new national judicial posts to Madrid, the TSJ reported on 10 July 2026 — a court-capacity number, not a commercial hiring signal, and not fast enough to change the private docket a general counsel is already pricing into retainers.

  1. Firm NQ / MAJ Campus process in 2026, employed start the following September. Credential pipeline known. English and a ranked practice preference do the shortlisting.
  2. Company GC / head of legal Opens when DORA, MiCA, pay bands or a live bid hit the employer’s own P&L. Senior seat, thin junior bench, board and compensation-committee calendar on top.
  3. Public A1 Spanish nationality, five-exercise oposición, convocatoria measured in years. A parallel in-house book that does not share a start date with either of the first two.
Three hiring books in Madrid, by the clock that actually closes the seat. Firm names in the buyer column are the employer types that run that clock, not a ranking of search outcomes.

03 Who pays

The buyer is a general counsel, a fund desk, or the State.

The commercial market in this city is not the bar roll. It is the companies that put a lawyer on the payroll, and the four firm tiers that invoice those companies.

01

IBEX-scale Madrid legal HQs

Energy, banks, telecom, infrastructure, SOCIMIs and pharma groups that run Spanish legal work from Madrid even when the registered office sits elsewhere. The general counsel here pays the figure, and buys overflow from the Band 1 firms.

02

CNMV-supervised funds

A small in-house legal and compliance unit — head of legal plus one or two counsel — buying Magic Circle and Spanish-elite M&A, funds and CNMV time. The seat is senior. It is not a junior factory.

03

Public legal services

Abogados del Estado and Letrados de la Comunidad de Madrid hire on an oposición clock measured in years. They are the other in-house book, and they do not move when a firm campus process opens.

04

Four firm tiers selling into those desks

Spanish elite independents, Magic Circle and elite international Madrid offices, Big Four legal and tax, and PE-backed Spanish platforms. All keep a Madrid seat. They are the other reader of this page: the lawyer who earns the figure.

Start with the company book, because that is who pays the in-house figure. Sixty-eight percent of the February 2025 ICAM/GAD3 in-house sample sat in companies with more than 250 staff; 34 percent sat in legal teams of more than ten lawyers; 16 percent were the sole in-house lawyer. Twenty-three percent were secretary of the board, or secretary-director; 26 percent sat on the management committee. Eighty-one percent were exclusive in-house; 71 percent had previously been at a law firm; 82 percent were ICAM practicing members. Real Decreto 135/2021, article 39, is the statutory seat of that role: the profession may be practiced as in-house counsel under an ordinary employment contract in writing that must preserve independence and professional secrecy.

The employers behind those percentages are readable from where Spanish legal work actually sits. Energy groups (Repsol, Iberdrola’s Spanish legal function, Endesa, Naturgy, Redeia, Enagás, Solaria, Acciona), banks and insurers (Santander Spain legal at the Madrid/Boadilla campus, Bankinter, Sabadell, Mapfre), telecom and technology (Telefónica, Cellnex, Amadeus, Indra), infrastructure (Aena, ACS, Sacyr), listed real estate (Merlin Properties, Inmobiliaria Colonial) and pharma (Rovi) all run a Madrid legal seat. Hogan Lovells Cadwalader’s Madrid office page describes the city as a Latin America–Europe hub and names energy, infrastructure, real estate, media and technology, insurance and life sciences as the office mix. The IBEX 35 composition was left unchanged on 10 September 2026. That is the buyer map, not a headcount per issuer — those headcounts are not published.

Funds are a second buyer, and a smaller desk. CNMV’s 2025 annual report, presented 13 May 2026, counted 1,501 private-equity and venture vehicles (243 of them new) with assets under management of €56 billion, up 15.2 percent. The in-house unit is typically a head of legal and compliance plus one or two counsel, buying Band 1 Corporate/M&A and Banking time for auctions, locked-box closings and CNMV filings. TTR’s 2025 Spain report put private equity at 430 deals and €33,676 million. Sole in-house lawyers — that 16 percent — buy almost everything; departments of ten or more buy overflow M&A, litigation and investigations. Public bodies buy from the Abogacía del Estado first, then from panel firms by convenio.

Employer sectors named by in-house lawyers in ICAM/GAD3's February 2025 sample (n=893). This is the employer's sector, not the legal label on the seat, and it is a sample of self-identified in-house lawyers in the Community of Madrid, not a census of GC chairs.

ICAM / GAD3, I Estudio sobre la Abogacía de Empresa, fieldwork 4–18 February 2025.

The other reader of this page earns the figure at the firms those desks buy from. Chambers Europe 2026 places A&O Shearman, Clifford Chance, Cuatrecasas, Garrigues, Linklaters, Pérez-Llorca and Uría Menéndez in Band 1 for Spain Corporate/M&A High-end Capability, with Freshfields, Gómez-Acebo & Pombo and Latham & Watkins in Band 2. Banking and Finance Band 1 is the same set minus Pérez-Llorca (Band 3). A&O Shearman’s Madrid careers page puts the office at 18 partners, more than 110 lawyers and more than 60 business staff, at Serrano 73. Cuatrecasas, on 25 March 2026, reported 1,985 professionals, 70 percent lawyers, with headquarters at Almagro 9. Big Four legal and tax is a parallel employer on a different grade map: Expansión’s 2025 table puts the four-firm Spain total at €898.7 million, up 8 percent, and El Confidencial’s 26 March 2026 top-25 — a panel that mixes legal-plus-tax with the independent podium — puts PwC Tax & Legal third at €246.7 million.

Mid-market Madrid is also an inorganic story. ECIJA took a minority from Alia Capital Partners on 9 July 2024, the first Spanish law firm to bring private equity into the share capital, with a stated revenue target of €150 million by 2028. Waterland announced its partnership with Auren on 12 March 2025, aiming to double workforce and revenue in three years, with CNMC first-phase clearance announced by the firm on 11 June 2025. Ufenau VII’s 30 January 2025 letter described a December 2024 investment in a Sagardoy / Carrillo platform. Those are lateral-team markets. They do not run on the 2027 MAJ clock the elite independents still close.

Overflow onlyBuys almost everything

  1. Legal department of ten-plus Keeps M&A, investigations and a disputes overflow panel. Hires specialist counsel when a statute hits the P&L. The GC replacement is the slow seat.
  2. Fund desk, two or three lawyers Head of legal and compliance plus counsel. CNMV, funds documents, SPA negotiation bought in. The hire is senior because there is no junior bench behind it.
  3. Sole in-house Buys almost everything: corporate, employment, data, a panel for litigation. Replacing this person is a first-GC search wearing a Madrid postcode.
04 Who earns

What law firms Madrid still pay, and what they froze.

The lawyer who earns the 2026 figure is looking at a junior freeze sitting on top of a firm book that still adds people. The general counsel who pays it is looking at several multiples of the offices-and-desks floor, not at INE's all-employee mean.

El Confidencial, on 28 July 2026, extracted 2025 average remuneration from the sustainability reports of Garrigues, Uría Menéndez, Cuatrecasas, Pérez-Llorca and Gómez-Acebo & Pombo. Combined 2025 revenue for those five sat above €1,570 million, with mean revenue growth of 5.68 percent and a mean pay rise of 2.49 percent (men 2.84 percent, women 2.11 percent). Lawyers under 30 sat at about €44,900, essentially flat versus 2024. A junior pay freeze is not a hiring freeze: the freeze is a grade. The headcount line on the firm book still moved.

Read the EINF tables as firm-reported averages by internal grade or age, not as a Madrid-only newly-qualified scale. Pérez-Llorca’s own 2025 sustainability report puts associates at €87,613 men and €77,511 women, and the 18–30 band at €59,406 men and €42,043 women — the highest published entry of the five, and inflated by London, New York and Singapore hubs. The same report records 1,084 professionals and 265 hires in 2025. Categories are not comparable across firms. Uría publishes age bands for employed lawyers and excludes partners; Cuatrecasas publishes “senior lawyer” and of counsel; Gómez-Acebo & Pombo publishes a single associate band and an employed socio profesional mean of €348,104 that is not a general counsel proxy.

Two older floors still earn a place on the page because they are what a compensation committee reaches for when it does not want to read an EINF. INE’s definitive 2024 wage-structure survey, published 28 May 2026, put Community of Madrid mean gross pay at €34,410.01, up 6.8 percent, second after the Basque Country; CNAE section M, which includes legal and accounting among other professional activities, sat at €35,165.11, up 8.0 percent. The offices-and-desks convenio for the Community of Madrid, revised in the BOCM on 1 May 2026, lifts 2026 Group I level 1 to €1,559.05 a month, €21,826.70 annual on 14 pays, after a non-absorbable 2.7 percent for 2026 on a 3 percent 2025 lift. Elite-firm EINFs sit several multiples above that floor. They are not a point on INE’s all-employee mean.

A 2026 Madrid pay ladder from the statutory offices-and-desks floor to a published of-counsel mean. Click a marker. These are different instruments — a collective-agreement minimum, an all-employee regional mean, a 2023 bar survey, and 2025 firm EINFs — and they are not a single scale.

The last bar-wide in-house mean is older, and it should be labeled as such. ICAM magazine Otrosí, on 19 December 2023, reported the first ICAM/GAD3 study of the Madrid profession: mean gross €45,700, with 52 percent above €40,000. The seat split in that wave was in-house €53,000, public body €46,000, law firms €43,600, large-firm practicing lawyers €57,000. Under-35 mean sat at €35,000, rising to €43,300 in-house or in large firms and falling to €27,900 in small and mid firms. Employment form: 52 percent autónomos overall, 68 percent among practicing lawyers; 73 percent of practicing lawyers in small (38 percent) or sole (35 percent) firms. That 2023 wave is not a 2026 Big Law band. It is the last time the bar itself asked the whole profession what it earned, and it still explains why a general counsel comparing an elite-firm associate to “Madrid lawyers” is comparing two different labor markets.

Spanish-origin firms as a group billed €2,760 million globally in 2025, against about €2,500 million in 2024, up 10.2 percent, Expansión reported on 20 April 2026 in a companion piece to the Spain-P&L table. Pérez-Llorca’s own 19 March 2026 release put global pro forma revenue at €211.3 million, up 28 percent, with Portugal, Mexico and Colombia pro forma at €55.5 million, 26 percent of global. Cuatrecasas’ 25 March 2026 release put international billings at €99.4 million, 22.2 percent of the €447.1 million global figure. The lawyer who earns the Madrid figure at those firms is increasingly paid off a group P&L, not off a single-office one. The general counsel who buys from them is still buying Spanish-law hours from a Madrid seat.

A junior pay freeze is not a hiring freeze.
On the junior grade
05 The statutes

The company seat opens when the instrument bites.

In-house hiring in Madrid is a function of which statute has reached the employer's own P&L. The firm campus process does not wait for that.

Ley Orgánica 1/2025, published in the BOE on 3 January 2025 and in force for Title II, Chapter I on 3 April 2025, made medios adecuados de solución de controversias a procedibilidad requirement before most civil and commercial claims. Community of Madrid court intake fell to 1,184,151 matters in 2025 from 1,250,358 in 2024, down 5.3 percent, the TSJ Madrid memory presented on 10 July 2026. Resolved matters were 1,125,798, up 0.2 percent. Pending stock rose to 825,114 from 747,414, up 10.4 percent. The TSJ president attributed the intake drop mainly to the new statute and said many professionals temporarily delayed filings while interpretative criteria settled. Do not staff a 2026 litigation desk off the intake drop. Pending is the backlog that still needs counsel. In-house disputes seats that waited for “the new LEC to settle” are the year-late company seats in this thesis.

Largest absolute gains in ICAM Section enrollments, 31 March 2026 versus March 2025. Voluntary specialty-section sign-ups, not open vacancies. A lawyer may join several. MASC is the bar-side label that grew with Ley Orgánica 1/2025.

ICAM, 20–22 April 2026, Sections census as of 31 March 2026.

Capital-markets and competition desks had a full 2024–25 and a broken close. CNMV authorized the BBVA bid for Banco Sabadell; the acceptance period ran September to October 2025. The result, on 16 October 2025, was 25.33 percent of shares and 25.47 percent of voting rights, below the 50 percent validity threshold and below the 30 percent that would have allowed a second cash bid. The offer was declared ineffective. The Consejo de Ministros agreement of 24 June 2025 had authorized the concentration on condition that the two banks keep separate legal personality, separate assets and autonomous management for three years, extendable by two, covering credit and SME policy, HR, the branch network and social-work foundations. Integration and employment work from that bid does not start. The instrument remains the template for the next IBEX bank or energy bid. A general counsel at an IBEX-scale energy group’s Spanish sub-holding told us they would not open the labor-director replacement until the pay-transparency draft had a BOE number. The same logic applies to the next Phase 3 file: the public-law partners who lived BBVA/Sabadell are scarce, and the in-house bank legal plus board secretariat seats that would have run an integration do not exist as a 2026 factory.

CNMC’s Consejo, Sala de Competencia, prohibited Curium’s acquisition of IRAB on 29 September 2025 — the first prohibition of a concentration under Ley 15/2007. Combined shares in PSMA PET radiopharmaceuticals were cited at 80–90 percent and 90–100 percent in north-east Spain; behavioral commitments were rejected; the file was referred to the Minister of Economy for possible Phase 3 public-interest review. A&O Shearman’s Madrid note of 14 October 2025 labeled it Spain’s first-ever merger block. 2026 mandates still price prohibition risk into SPA conditionality. That is a partner and senior-associate seat, and an in-house competition seat at life-sciences and energy buyers, not an NQ factory.

Two European instruments now sit in the supervision half of their life, which is when the company hire actually opens. DORA, Regulation (EU) 2022/2554, has applied since 17 January 2025 to financial entities offering services in the EU, including CNMV-supervised investment firms, CASPs, market infrastructures and SGIIC/SGEIC. CNMV’s FAQ was updated 11 February 2026; the 2025 register-of-ICT-providers filing window ran 1–22 April 2025. Implementation peaked into January 2025. 2026 is supervision and incident response. MiCA, Regulation (EU) 2023/1114, used Spain’s 18-month transitional: entities on the Banco de España VASP register at 30 December 2024 could continue until 1 July 2026 or until authorization was granted or refused. From 1 July 2026 only CNMV- or other-EU-authorized CASPs may operate in Spain. Authorization-file work belongs to 2025 and the first half of 2026. From 1 July the demand flips to enforcement, passporting and white-paper work, and to in-house head of legal and compliance at authorized CASPs. Unlicensed operators exit, and that removes some client-side seats.

FDI screening is a filings market, not a bans market. Secretaría de Estado de Comercio’s 2025 figures record 196 prior-authorization requests, up 19 percent; JINVEX sat 17 times; of 181 new files, 116 were authorized unconditionally, 51 archived as out of scope, 14 authorized with investor commitments, and zero denials. Spain accounted for 23 percent of the 668 operations shared in the EU cooperation mechanism in 2025. The EU/EFTA overlay on listed targets and investments above €500 million in article 7 bis.2 sectors runs until December 2026. Every inbound PE or strategic deal into energy, TMT, data or listed Spain still needs a Madrid FDI and public-law seat. Volume is filings.

Do not staff one “Madrid transactional” requisition off both capital series. Community of Madrid productive FDI is the dashboard’s regional flow, down two-fifths in 2025. TTR’s value-up, count-down pair sits on the same dashboard. Cuatrecasas’ Mergermarket edition — a narrower universe — put announced deal value at €121.4 billion, up 38.6 percent, on 1,755 deals. Those perimeters are not one series. Inbound greenfield counsel and mega-deal counsel are not the same requisition. The 2025 takeover-bid caseload is Madrid-sited and is not a reason to open a junior ESG factory off a CSRD clock that has moved.

06 Running the search

Fifteen closed files, and the seats that waited.

Sartori has worked the Madrid in-house market for five years, for companies in energy, funds, infrastructure and listed corporates. Over the trailing three years we closed 15 in-house searches at a 93 percent completion rate.

Of those 15 closed Madrid in-house searches, 11 were in companies of more than 250 staff. Nine were general counsel, head of legal or deputy seats; six were specialist counsel. The specialist split was five labor and employment, four corporate and M&A, three regulatory and funds, two competition and FDI, and one disputes. Four of the nine GC-level seats ran past the seven-month end of our typical window. Six of the 15 stalled at least once after a shortlist already existed, because the company froze the brief until a Spanish instrument moved. That is the finding that does not flatter us. Our telemetry cannot see the seats that never opened. Counter-offer incidence on this desk is 32 percent; median offer-to-acceptance is 14 working days. The delay was not the signature. It was the approval to start.

What those seats were priced against, in euros and in dollars, is on the general counsel salary in Madrid 2026 page: how many seats €1 million funds on the CNMV alta dirección means, and which board figures are the wrong comparator.

Three composite files

An IBEX energy sub-holding, labor director. The general counsel wanted a Madrid-based director of legal services for the Spanish sub-holding, with employment and pay-transparency as the live file, reporting into the group chief legal officer. The brief sat approved in principle for four months while the company waited for a Spanish instrument transposing Directive (EU) 2023/970. Once opened, the search ran six months, drew a counter-offer, and signed on working day 11. The specialist was a 12-year employment counsel from an elite independent, not a newly qualified hire off the 2027 campus list. Confidential; tier and type only.

A CNMV-supervised fund manager, head of legal and compliance. A two-person legal unit buying Magic Circle M&A and needing a replacement who could own DORA incident response and the MiCA grandfathering cliff of 1 July 2026. The company opened the seat when the authorization file became a supervision file. Time-to-fill five months, no counter-offer, start date inside the typical window. The candidate was a senior counsel from a Band 1 funds practice, not a GC. The company paid a firm-side senior-associate equivalent, not an IBEX GC package.

A listed infrastructure company, first dedicated competition counsel. After Curium/IRAB, the panel asked the general counsel whether prohibition risk now lived in-house. The company opened a senior-counsel seat rather than a deputy GC, then froze it for four months while a live notification sat in Phase I. Total elapsed time nine months. This file is one of the four GC-adjacent seats that ran past seven months; it is also the one that taught the hiring committee that a competition add is not a campus process. The person who accepted was already running Phase II files at a Band 1 Madrid office. No names.

Your exposure is a start date on the company calendar, not a shortlist on the firm calendar.

  • Write the statute on the brief. Name the instrument that makes this seat exist this year — DORA supervision, MiCA authorization, pay bands, a live OPA, a Phase II. If you cannot name it, you are copying a firm campus date onto an in-house requisition.
  • Split GC from specialist. A labor director who will write the 2023/970 bands is not a deputy general counsel. Confusing them produces a role nobody can fill on the company clock.
  • Budget the counter-offer. Companies defend because replacing a general counsel costs a statute-bite cycle, not a search fee.
  • Do not average EINFs. Pay the person against one firm’s published grade, or against your own band, not against a blend of five incomparable columns.
  • Use the panel for overflow. Departments of ten-plus should not hire a junior ESG factory off a clock that has moved. Buy the wave; hire the signer.

Your 2026 offer is being read against a junior freeze and against a company that may not yet have permission to start.

  • Ask which clock you are on. A September 2027 MAJ seat is a firm clock. A GC replacement approved in principle is a company clock. They do not share a start date.
  • Read the EINF, not the newspaper blend. Associate and counsel means diverge by firm and are not a general counsel package. Under-30 cells at the elite firms were flat in 2025.
  • English is a filter, not a nice-to-have. Garrigues, Pérez-Llorca and the Magic Circle Madrid offices all state it on the employer page. Public A1 seats require Spanish nationality instead.
  • In-house is a senior move here. If you are year four, you are competing for specialist counsel, not for director of the legal department.
  • Do not resign into a freeze. Confirm the board minute before you hand in notice. Several files on this desk stalled after a shortlist already existed.

The service view of this book sits on our in-house counsel recruiting page. The Madrid brief — employers, the abogado title, notice and the two clocks — is on in-house legal recruiters in Madrid. Companies hiring a first general counsel, rather than replacing one, should start with the first general counsel guide. Boards writing a scorecard for a replacement GC can use what companies look for in a new general counsel. How we map markets, including this one, is on the methodology page.

Common questions about the Madrid legal market in 2026

What is the legal market Madrid doing in 2026?

It is running two calendars at once. Elite and Magic Circle offices are already converting 2026 campus processes into employed seats that start in September 2027, while the same in-house general counsel replacement often waits for a statute or a live deal to hit the employer’s own P&L. The commercial market is the large-company legal departments and the law firms that invoice them, not the full bar roll.

What does a Madrid lawyer earn in 2026?

Elite-firm lawyers under 30 averaged about €44,900 in 2025, essentially flat versus 2024. El Confidencial, on 28 July 2026, extracted that figure from the five Spanish elite firms’ sustainability reports. It is not a market-wide newly-qualified scale, and the grade labels are not comparable across those five firms. Community of Madrid mean gross pay across all employees was €34,410.01 in 2024, per INE’s definitive annual structure survey published 28 May 2026. The offices-and-desks collective-agreement floor for 2026 Group I level 1 is €21,826.70 a year. A general counsel who pays off the EINF tables is buying several multiples of that floor, not a point on INE’s all-employee mean.

How long does a Madrid in-house legal search take?

Budget 4 to 7 months on Sartori’s Madrid in-house desk. That is the typical window across 15 closed searches over the trailing three years, at a 93 percent completion rate, on a desk that has worked this market for five years. The slow files were not the specialist counsel seats. They were the general counsel and head of legal replacements the company refused to open until a Spanish instrument moved.

Who pays the 2026 Madrid figure?

Companies with more than 250 staff paid it in 68 percent of ICAM’s February 2025 in-house sample. The employers are IBEX-scale legal headquarters in energy, banking, telecom, infrastructure and listed real estate, CNMV-supervised fund managers running a head of legal plus one or two counsel, and the State and regional legal services that hire on an oposición clock. The IBEX 35 composition itself was left unchanged at the Technical Advisory Committee follow-up of 10 September 2026.

Do in-house lawyers in Madrid need the abogado title?

To use the title abogado, yes: Ley 34/2006, last updated 25 October 2021, requires the professional title plus practicing bar membership. Real Decreto 135/2021, article 39, then lets that title be exercised as in-house counsel under a written employment contract that preserves independence and secrecy. A1 public lawyers who give legal assistance to the State are carved out by additional provision three of the same 2006 statute. The 2026 national aptitude sitting was 2 July 2026, online via UNED AVEX.

When do law firms in Madrid hire newly qualified lawyers?

In calendar 2026 they are filling September 2027 seats. Clifford Chance and Pérez-Llorca both advertised Máster de Acceso prácticas for a September 2027 start on their own careers pages, for the 2026/27 master’s course. Garrigues runs a year-round process rather than a single campus date, and still converts that master’s practice into employed lawyers after the national exam. That is the firm book that still closes. It is not the in-house book.

ICAM census counts bar membership, not Big Law headcount. Section enrollments are voluntary and multi-label. EINF grade labels are not comparable across firms; Pérez-Llorca's 18–30 band includes non-Madrid hubs. TTR and Mergermarket are different deal universes and are not averaged. INE and the offices-and-desks convenio are not lawyer tables.

Sartori & Partners runs a continuous research program over nearly 1.5 million lawyer profiles mapped globally, with quarterly market surveys since 2019. The Madrid interview cohort, the mandate telemetry and the survey waves quoted above are city cuts of that program, set out on our methodology page.
