Law firm partner salary in Madrid, 2026: the published cell is not equity.

A general counsel pricing a Madrid partner, and a partner reading the letter, are not looking at the same number. The dated public cell is a 2025 labor-contract mean of €348,104. Equity profit is not in that table.

The published partner cell is a payroll mean.

Law firm partner salary Madrid has one partner-labeled public cell in 2026: €348,104. The figure is a 2025 labor-contract mean. It is not an equity draw.

Across 250 structured interviews with Madrid partners and counsel, companies quote that cell before they ask whether the seat is equity. El Confidencial, in a reading by Alejandro Galisteo published on 28 July 2026, put the 2025 professional-partner mean at Gómez-Acebo & Pombo at €348,104, up 5.18 percent on 2024. The same piece describes the figure as a labor contract, and says it is mostly men at that firm. No Madrid firm has published an equity profit-per-partner figure for 2025 or 2026.

El Confidencial, on 28 July 2026, put Gómez-Acebo and Pombo's 2025 professional-partner mean at €348,104. The contract is employment. The figure is not an equity draw. €348,104 is payroll, not PEP.

02 The printed cell

Law firm partner salary Madrid is a labor-contract mean.

The five reports do not use one category for the people a client would call a partner. A mean inside one label cannot be laid on another label.

El Confidencial’s 28 July 2026 reading covers Garrigues, Uría Menéndez, Cuatrecasas, Pérez-Llorca and Gómez-Acebo & Pombo. Mean revenue at the five rose 5.68 percent. Combined revenue was above €1,570 million. Mean pay rose 2.49 percent, men 2.84 percent and women 2.11 percent. Pay rose by less than revenue. The reports do not show where the gap went, because equity allocations sit outside the salary table. Garrigues left its partners out of the 2025 salary table.

That exclusion changes the age bands that remain. At Uría Menéndez the reading is limited to lawyers on an employment contract. Men on that contract averaged €77,941, down 2.06 percent. Women averaged €67,343, up 2.48 percent. Lawyers over 50 on the employment contract averaged €56,935, up 2.85 percent. The over-50 band falls because the partners are not in it. Treating €56,935 as what a senior Madrid partner earned in 2025 inverts the table.

Gómez-Acebo & Pombo is the exception that still uses a partner label. The €348,104 mean is the socio profesional figure: a professional partner on a labor contract, up 5.18 percent on 2024, and mostly men at that firm. Firm revenue in the same reading was €105.87 million, up 5.9 percent. The mean is a payroll average at a firm of that size. It is not a profit share, and it is not a market-wide partner wage. Pérez-Llorca’s €245,934 is the highest payroll cell in that firm’s report for men across alta dirección, counsel and of counsel, up 11.93 percent. Women in the same grouped category were €212,336, up 7.58 percent. Neither number is a partner.

Year-on-year change, 2025 versus 2024, five firms. Percent, not euros.

El Confidencial, Alejandro Galisteo, 28 July 2026.

Cuatrecasas prints of counsel and executive bands, not a partner band. Of-counsel men were €208,366. Executive men were €229,019 and executive women €233,638. Global revenue at Cuatrecasas in that reading was €448.30 million, up 2.5 percent. Garrigues counsel men were €175,223, up 5.03 percent, and counsel women €158,729, up 3.57 percent. Global revenue at Garrigues was €527.69 million, up 9.51 percent. Associate and junior rungs sit on the Spain lawyer salary page and are not rebuilt here.

A sustainability report is an employment disclosure. Categories differ by firm, gender splits are not drawn on the same cut, and the partnership account is absent. A board paper that averages these cells into one “Madrid partner salary” is averaging different jobs. The only sentence the reports support is narrower: one firm published a professional-partner labor mean of €348,104 for 2025, and the other four published payroll categories that are not partners.

The sustainability report is the payroll. The partnership agreement is the pay.

03 Three products

Equity is a different contract from the printed mean.

Three seats get called a partner move in Madrid. Only one of them appears in the sustainability report under a partner label.

ContractWhere the cash sits

  1. Labor professional partner Employment contract. The sustainability report can print a mean. Capital is not the point of the letter.
  2. Equity profit share Partnership allocation. Outside the payroll table. Often a capital contribution, and a vote under the professional-company rules.
  3. Company payroll The group pays a salary. The candidate leaves the firm draw. The comparator is the company’s own band, not the labor mean.

Professional partners must hold a majority of capital and of votes. The consolidated text of Ley 2/2007, published as an informative consolidation and last updated on 3 January 2025, says so in Article 4: a majority of the capital and of the voting rights, and at least half plus one of the board, in the hands of professional partners. The period to cure a breach is six months. The original 2007 wording is not the text to quote. A Spanish professional company that slips under that majority has a statutory problem, not a compensation problem.

The statute does not set the euro figure. It sets who may own the vehicle. An international firm’s Madrid office can be a branch of a foreign partnership rather than a sociedad profesional under that law. A&O Shearman’s Spain careers page lists 18 partners and more than 110 lawyers. Their global equity account is a different instrument from a Madrid labor mean. For the year ended 30 April 2026, A&O Shearman reported profit per equity partner of £2.2 million, about $2.9 million, in a firm release on 16 July 2026. That print is global. It is not a Madrid payroll cell, and it is not a euro scale. The London table is the London partner salary page.

The hiring mistake is to treat the three stops above as one price. A labor professional partner is an employee with a partner title. An equity partner is a participant in profit, and often a contributor of capital. A company hire is an employee of the client. Matching €348,104 into an equity letter, or into a general-counsel offer, copies a number onto a contract that does not pay that way. Who is hiring is the subject of the Madrid legal market page. The contract the number belongs to is the distinction above.

04 Who pays

Name the contract before you match the cash.

The payer is usually a general counsel or a hiring partner. The earner is the lawyer whose current contract is one of the three above. They do not share a single comparator.

A company that matches €348,104 is matching a labor mean. If the seat is a general counsel or a head of legal, the firm’s professional-partner average is the wrong anchor. €1 million divided by €348,104 is 2.87. That arithmetic says what the cell can buy if someone insists on using it. It does not say what a Madrid company should post. Company-payroll figures are on the Madrid general counsel salary page and the Madrid in-house counsel salary page.

If the seat is an equity lateral into a Spanish firm, the letter has to say whether there is a capital call, how profit is allocated, and whether Ley 2/2007’s majority test is the frame. The sustainability-report mean does not answer those questions. If the seat is a labor professional-partner title, the mean is at least the right family of contract, and it is still one firm’s average, mostly men, for 2025, not a 2026 offer.

The fee for a search is retained only, on every search: 25 to 30 percent of the first-year total compensation the company actually pays, and the retainer is 30 percent of that fee. It is not a percentage of a published mean the candidate never receives. Partner search sits with partner recruiting. A company seat sits with in-house counsel recruiting. The conversation starts at contact or a direct call.

The lawyer on a labor professional-partner contract can compare an offer with a published mean of €348,104 and know the family is right, then still has to read the bonus, the hours and the exit. The lawyer on an equity share cannot. Nothing in the 2025 reports states that lawyer’s allocation. Using the labor mean as a floor, or as a ceiling, imports a contract the equity partner does not have.

An of-counsel or alta dirección employee is in a third position. Pérez-Llorca’s €245,934 and Cuatrecasas’s executive bands are the public neighborhood for that payroll, not a promise that a partner title pays the same. Moving from that payroll onto equity is a change of product. Moving from it onto a company salary is a different change again. The Spain associate table does not price either move.

Counter-offers on this line are common enough to plan for. Of 25 offers, 11 drew one, which is 44 percent. The median from offer to acceptance was 14 working days. A capital call that misses that window is a second letter, not a rounding error.

The marginal rate above €300,000 is 45 percent. The Agencia Tributaria’s 2025 state scale, the scale on the return filed in 2026, charges 9.50 percent to €12,450, 12 percent to €20,200, 15 percent to €35,200, 18.50 percent to €60,000, 22.50 percent to €300,000, and 24.50 percent above that. The Madrid autonomous scale for the same year, Article 1 of Decreto Legislativo 1/2010 as deflated by Ley 13/2023, charges 8.50 percent to €13,362.22, 10.70 percent to €19,004.63, 12.80 percent to €35,425.68, 17.40 percent to €57,320.40, and 20.50 percent thereafter.

Added at the brackets that matter for this cash, the combined marginal rate is 43 percent from €60,000 to €300,000 (22.50 plus 20.50) and 45 percent above €300,000 (24.50 plus 20.50). A narrow band from €57,320.40 to €60,000 combines at 39 percent. These are marginal rates on the general base. They are not a computed take-home of €348,104, because deductions, the savings base, and residency are not in the salary cell. No savings-base rate is stated here.

Percent. The 43 and 45 marks are combined Madrid marginal rates on the general base, 2025 scales. The 24 and 47 marks are the Article 93 election, which is not the default on an equity draw.

AEAT, IRPF 2025 state scale, Madrid autonomous scale, and Article 93.

Article 93 is an election, not the tax on an equity draw. Since 1 January 2023 the special regime for workers who acquire Spanish tax residence charges 24 percent on income up to €600,000 and 47 percent on the excess. The election covers the year residence is acquired and the following five tax years. It can reach employees, remote workers, entrepreneurs, and certain highly qualified professionals whose qualifying work is more than 40 percent of their business, professional and employment income. A lateral who already lives in Madrid, or who joins as an equity partner without meeting those tests, stays on the ordinary scale. On a general-base salary of €348,104, the slice above €300,000 is €48,104. That slice, not the whole mean, is the part taxed at 45 percent. Quoting a flat 24 percent on an equity draw, when Article 93 does not apply, understates the marginal rate on income between €300,000 and €600,000, where the ordinary combined rate is 45 percent and the election would have been 24. Above €600,000 the election’s own marginal rate is 47 percent, two points over the ordinary 45.

We opened on the published professional-partner mean. The candidate’s letter was a profit allocation. Those are not the same check.
General counsel, listed infrastructure group, Madrid
06 What the letter omits

Cash is the line the report can print.

Four instruments show up in a Madrid partner file. They are not four ways of saying the same euro figure.

InstrumentWhat it can decide

  1. The statute Who must hold the capital and the votes in a professional company, and how long a breach can run.
  2. The disclosure Employment categories in the sustainability report. Silent on the equity allocation.
  3. The tax return 2025 state and Madrid scales, filed in 2026, on the general base. Not a net-pay calculator.
  4. The election Article 93, only if it is chosen and the tests are met. Not the default on a profit share.

The payroll cell does not fund a capital call. On the offers Sartori issued, the counter-offer rate is the practical version of that gap. 11 of 25 offers drew a counter-offer. That is 44 percent of offers, not 44 percent of the 13 searches. A search can carry more than one offer. The rate is there so a payer does not budget a single clean acceptance. The median acceptance still landed in 14 working days when the contract in the letter matched the contract the candidate was leaving.

Google Ads Keyword Planner recorded 0 monthly searches for this phrase on 11 September 2026. The public cells above are still the cells a board can cite. They come from sustainability reports, not from a search-volume table. The research program and the methodology are where the interview book and the mandate book are described. They are not where a firm’s equity account is published, because that account is not public.

07 The files

Where the brief matched the contract, and where it did not.

The closed Madrid partner searches, over three years, split by the contract that was actually signed, not by the title on the first draft.

Of the 13 closed searches, 7 were equity-share laterals, 4 were professional-partner labor seats, and 2 moved onto a company payroll. 4 of the 7 equity files opened on the labor cell. The first number in the brief was €348,104, or a round figure taken from it. The letter the candidate expected was a profit allocation.

3 of those 4 ran past 4 to 7 months. The miss was the brief, not the market’s refusal to move. One of those three missed the 14-day acceptance window on the first capital call and signed on a second offer. The other equity files that were priced as equity from the start did not need that second letter. Completion on the line was 94 percent. The slow files are inside the closed 13. They are the evidence that a wrong comparator costs months, not the evidence that the line fails.

Three contracts inside the same closed set. Weeks are the file, not a promise that every file lands on the same week.
What signed Count How the file ran
Equity-share lateral 7 4 opened on the labor cell. 3 of those ran past seven months.
Professional-partner labor seat 4 One closed in 15 weeks. No capital call. That is faster than the four-to-seven-month band, not inside it.
Company payroll 2 One in 18 weeks, one in 22 weeks. Both sit inside four to seven months.

A listed infrastructure general counsel in Madrid hired a finance partner in 18 weeks. The first draft matched the professional-partner mean. The candidate’s current arrangement was a profit allocation. The general counsel told us: We opened on the published professional-partner mean. The candidate’s letter was a profit allocation. Those are not the same check. The search closed when the offer became a company salary with a bonus, not a clone of the firm draw. Eighteen weeks sits inside the four-to-seven-month band.

The other company file was a deputy head of legal at a listed bank. It closed in 22 weeks, after the remuneration committee refused a profit-share clone and the offer was rewritten as payroll. Twenty-two weeks is still inside four to seven months. Copying the firm allocation into the committee paper is what added the weeks.

One of the four labor seats closed in 15 weeks. The title was professional partner, the contract was employment, and there was no capital call. Fifteen weeks is faster than the four-to-seven-month band because the product was simpler. It is not evidence that an equity lateral should be budgeted at fifteen weeks.

A hiring partner at a Spanish firm in Madrid told us: The sustainability report is the payroll. The partnership agreement is the pay. That firm’s equity files are among the seven. The ones that started from the agreement, rather than from the report, did not spend the extra months re-cutting the letter.

  1. 01 Is the seat a labor contract, an equity share, or a company payroll? If the brief does not say, stop. The published cell cannot choose the product.
  2. 02 Does a capital call have to clear inside the acceptance window? If yes, the window is the offer letter. The payroll cell does not fund the call.
  3. 03 Is the comparator the sustainability-report cell, or a profit allocation? If the letter and the cell are different products, rebrief before the first interview.

Of 64 equity-side respondents inside the 250-interview cohort, 41 said, over the 24 months to September 2026, that companies quote the sustainability-report ceiling first. That is a description of how briefs open. It is not a claim that the ceiling is the right price. Sartori has run this partner line for 5 years.

The map of roughly 2,500 Madrid lawyers does not record whether a name is on a labor contract or an equity share. Headcount without the contract is the blind spot. Only the closed files above say which contract was signed.

Law firm partner pay in Madrid: questions from both sides of the letter

What is law firm partner salary Madrid in 2026?

The only partner-labeled public cell is €348,104, a 2025 labor mean at Gómez-Acebo & Pombo. El Confidencial published that reading on 28 July 2026. Garrigues left partners out of its 2025 salary table. Sartori closed 13 Madrid partner searches over three years. Equity profit per partner is not in any of those reports.

Is €348,104 equity partner pay?

The €348,104 cell is a labor-contract mean, up 5.18 percent on 2024, not an equity draw. El Confidencial, on 28 July 2026, described Gómez-Acebo & Pombo's socio profesional figure as employment pay, mostly men at that firm. A profit allocation sits in the partnership agreement. It does not sit in that cell.

What tax hits a Madrid partner on that cash in 2026?

The combined top marginal rate is 45 percent on general-base income above €300,000. That is the 2025 state scale of 24.50 percent plus the Madrid autonomous scale of 20.50 percent, the scales used on the return filed in 2026. From €60,000 to €300,000 the combined marginal rate is 43 percent. The bill still depends on which base the income sits on.

Can an inbound partner elect the 24 percent regime?

The special regime taxes 24 percent up to €600,000 and 47 percent above, and it is an election. Article 93 of the personal-income-tax law, as amended with effect from 1 January 2023, covers the year residence is acquired and the following five tax years. A lateral equity partner is not inside it by default. The ordinary Madrid scale applies unless the election is actually made and the tests are met.

How long does a Madrid partner search take?

A Madrid partner search typically takes 4 to 7 months, with a median of 14 working days from offer to acceptance. Sartori closed 13 Madrid partner searches over three years, at a 94 percent completion rate. 11 of 25 offers drew a counter-offer, which is 44 percent. 3 of the 4 equity files that opened on the labor cell ran past seven months.

Should a company match the professional-partner mean to hire in-house?

€1 million funds 2.87 of the €348,104 professional-partner means, and that cell is the wrong match for an in-house seat. Dividing €1,000,000 by €348,104 produces 2.87. The cell is a labor mean at one firm, not a general-counsel package. The Madrid general-counsel and in-house pages carry the company-payroll figures: general counsel salary in Madrid and in-house counsel salary in Madrid.
