Salary · Madrid 2026
Lawyer salary in Madrid 2026: three prices, one seat.
A general counsel writing a Madrid offer, and a lawyer reading it, are not looking at one number. The convenio floor, the Garrigues employed cell, and a London conversion are three different products.
A census is not a paycheck.
ICAM counted 44,883 practicing lawyers in Madrid in its 2025 memoria. A company that treats that census as lawyer salary Madrid has already briefed the wrong seat.
ICAM’s 2025 memoria puts the census at 73,960 and practicing members at 44,883, or 61 percent. Cinco Días reported the memoria on 10 June 2026. Headcount is not cash.
The dated prints sit in the table below. The Garrigues cell is unpacked further down.

Most of the Madrid roll never sees this offer.
The family section of the college is larger than the in-house section. A general counsel hiring a commercial lawyer is not hiring the census.
The family section outnumbers the in-house section. ICAM, reporting section rolls at 31 March 2026, counted 15,059 distinct section members, up 700 from March 2025. Familia y Sucesiones held 5,612. Procesal held 4,503, Laboral y Sindical 4,343, and penalists 4,334. Abogados de Empresa held 3,649, a gain of 338 on the year. A lawyer can sit in more than one section. The 3,649 figure is a voluntary inscription list. It is not a wage, and it is not a count of every in-house counsel in the city.
The practicing roll underneath those sections is larger and still not a salary. ICAM’s Memoria de Actividad 2025, in the “ICAM en 50 cifras” plate, puts the census at 73,960 and practicing members at 44,883, which the plate marks as 61 percent. Non-practicing members are printed at 28,168, or 38 percent. Women are 36,473 of the census, 49 percent. Cinco Días, on 10 June 2026, reported that the same memoria recorded more than 163,000 turno de oficio designations and more than 120,000 duty-lawyer attendances. That is the public-aid book. It is a large share of what the college actually does. It is not the offer a listed company is writing.
Across 250 structured interviews with Madrid associates, counsel, and in-house lawyers, 142 sat in Spanish-elite or Magic Circle Madrid employed seats over a 24-month window. 94 of those 142 told Sartori the last offer was priced on a Spanish euro lockstep, not on a London conversion and not on the college census. The in-house cut of the same cohort is a different group of respondents. Sartori maps roughly 2,500 lawyers in Madrid. That file records admission, employer, and a practice label. It does not record a convenio grade, and it does not record an in-house wage.
Garrigues’s own Madrid office page states a team of over 400 professionals, and that office is the firm’s corporate seat. A&O Shearman’s Spain careers page, accessed in October 2026, states 18 partners, over 110 lawyers, and more than 60 business-team employees in Madrid. Those two offices are not the 44,883. A general counsel who opens a search against the census will staff a seat the commercial market is not paying.
A Madrid census tells a company how many lawyers hold the title. It does not tell the company what to pay.
The convenio cell is a floor, not an associate band.
Real Decreto 126/2026 and the Madrid office agreement set what a contract cannot undercut. Garrigues junior men sit EUR 24,182.30 above the titled-staff cell.
The convenio cell is a floor, not an associate band. Real Decreto 126/2026, published in the Boletín Oficial del Estado on 19 February 2026 and in force from 20 February, sets the 2026 salario mínimo at EUR 40.70 a day or EUR 1,221 a month, with effects from 1 January through 31 December 2026. The annual comparison floor is EUR 17,094. A professional salary already above that floor is not rewritten by the decree. The decree is the bottom of every private contract in Spain. It is not a Madrid lawyer scale.
The Madrid instrument that sits just above it is the Convenio de Oficinas y Despachos. A resolution of 17 April 2026, registering the paritaria revision signed on 20 March 2026, was published in the Boletín Oficial de la Comunidad de Madrid on 1 May 2026. Grupo I nivel 1, the titled-superior cell, is EUR 1,559.05 a month and EUR 21,826.70 over 14 pays. Grupo V nivel 9 is pinned to the statutory monthly rate of EUR 1,221, which is the same EUR 17,094 annual floor. Law firms in Madrid that employ staff on this agreement cannot pay a titled worker less than Grupo I.1. They routinely pay commercial associates more. The agreement does not say how much more.
Set the Garrigues junior cell on top of that floor and the gap is arithmetic, not a survey. El Confidencial, on 28 July 2026, put 2025 junior men at EUR 46,009 and junior women at EUR 45,883. Subtract the convenio annual: EUR 46,009 minus EUR 21,826.70 is EUR 24,182.30. The junior mean is a little more than twice the titled-staff minimum. The Instituto Nacional de Estadística, publishing the 2024 wage-structure survey on 28 May 2026, put mean earnings in the Comunidad de Madrid at EUR 34,410.01, up 6.8 percent, against a national mean of EUR 29,540.26, up 5.3 percent. Madrid men in that survey earned EUR 37,634.49 and Madrid women EUR 31,048.41. Those are all employees in the region. A Garrigues junior sits EUR 11,598.99 above the regional mean. Using the regional mean as a lawyer budget underpays the commercial cell by that gap.
StatuteThe letter
- National minimum A comparison floor under every private contract in Spain. It does not become an associate scale because a law firm is the employer.
- Office agreement The titled-staff cell a Madrid office cannot undercut. Commercial associates are paid above it. The agreement does not name the gap.
- Employed cell The figure a general counsel matches when the lawyer is leaving a Madrid headquarters. A different instrument from the floor.
SMI annual floor, 2026
Real Decreto 126/2026. A comparison floor, not an associate band.
BOE-A-2026-3815 ↗Lawyer salary Madrid is the Garrigues cell, not the census.
El Confidencial read the 2025 employed table on 28 July 2026. Fees at the five national firms rose faster than the pay on that table. The junior rung barely moved.
Garrigues junior men earned EUR 46,009 in 2025. El Confidencial, on 28 July 2026, reading the sustainability reports of Garrigues, Uría Menéndez, Cuatrecasas, Pérez-Llorca, and Gómez-Acebo & Pombo, put combined 2025 revenue up 5.68 percent to more than EUR 1,570 million. Mean employed pay rose 2.84 percent for men, 2.11 percent for women, and 2.49 percent overall. Inside Garrigues, junior women were at EUR 45,883 and junior men at EUR 46,009, which the piece describes as almost flat. Associate women were at EUR 60,324, down 2.32 percent, and associate men at EUR 61,120, down 2.95 percent. Senior-associate women were at EUR 99,710 and senior-associate men at EUR 98,205. Principal associates were at EUR 144,999 and EUR 145,409. Counsel women were at EUR 158,729, up 3.57 percent, and counsel men at EUR 175,223, up 5.03 percent.
Equity holders sit outside that employed table. A company that reads the counsel mean as a partnership draw is reading the wrong instrument. A company that reads it as a junior offer is reading the wrong rung. The national detail for the other four firms, including age bands that mix foreign offices into a Spanish mean, is on the Spain lawyer-salary page. This page keeps Garrigues because the headquarters, and the office of over 400 professionals, is in Madrid.
The fee line above those cells is a Madrid payroll in euros, including at the international names. Expansión, on 20 April 2026, put combined revenue of legal firms in the Spanish market at EUR 4,500 million for 2025, up 8.3 percent and the first print above that line, with the pace slower than the prior run of years. The ranking reprinted with that issue puts Garrigues Spain at EUR 437.2 million, up 4.3 percent, and Garrigues worldwide at EUR 527.7 million, up 9.5 percent. Cuatrecasas Spain is EUR 347.7 million and Cuatrecasas worldwide EUR 447.1 million, so Spain is 77.8 percent of that firm’s world revenue. Uría Menéndez Spain is EUR 243.6 million. Pérez-Llorca Spain rose from EUR 133.6 million to EUR 155.8 million. Baker McKenzie Spain is EUR 116 million. Linklaters Spain is EUR 86.8 million and Clifford Chance Spain EUR 84 million, both above EUR 80 million on the same table. A&O Shearman Spain is EUR 73 million. Spain-origin firms together billed EUR 2,760 million, up 10.2 percent. None of those figures is a paycheck. All of them are euro billings. A Magic Circle balance sheet in Madrid is not the £150,000 London lockstep.
The London number still has to be converted, because group compensation keeps pasting it into Madrid requisitions. Clifford Chance moved London newly qualified base to £150,000, backdated to 1 May 2024, as The Lawyer reported on 29 May 2024. Slaughter and May matched from 1 September 2024, as The Lawyer reported on 4 September 2024, in line with Freshfields, Linklaters, Clifford Chance, and A&O Shearman. The Lawyer’s UK compilation last fully updated on 4 December 2025. The Official Journal of the European Union, C/2026/4605, records the ECB reference for 11 September 2026 at 0.85815 pounds per euro and USD 1.1592 per euro. Divide £150,000 by 0.85815 and the euro cash is EUR 174,795. Garrigues counsel men, at EUR 175,223, sit EUR 428 above that conversion. At the same dollar rate, EUR 46,009 is USD 53,334 and EUR 174,795 is USD 202,622. A Madrid company that posts the converted City figure has posted counsel cash.
Converted London newly qualified cash and Garrigues counsel cash are EUR 428 apart. They are not the same seat.
The company matches a rung. It does not match the census.
In-house counsel in the Madrid cohort priced the last hire off an elite-firm associate rung. The census was not the benchmark.
FloorCounsel cash
- Convenio The titled-staff minimum in a Madrid office. Real, dated, and the wrong opening number for a commercial associate.
- Associate rung The employed cell a general counsel matches when the lawyer is leaving a Madrid headquarters. Ordinary employment once the seat is in-house.
- Counsel or City Garrigues counsel, or a London newly qualified figure someone converted. Same neighborhood of euros. A different job.
Madrid still took 51.9 percent of Spain’s foreign investment. The Secretaría de Estado de Comercio published 2025 DataInvex flows on 20 March 2026. Productive foreign direct investment, gross and excluding holding companies, was EUR 30,764 million, down 21.8 percent. The Comunidad de Madrid took EUR 15,970 million, 51.9 percent, and that regional figure was down 40 percent. Half the inflow still lands here. The pot is smaller than 2024. A general counsel staffing a Madrid financing or corporate seat is hiring into that smaller pot, not into a boom narrative, and not into a census of 44,883.
The in-house cut of the interview cohort is the payer’s evidence. Of 76 in-house counsel, general counsel, and heads of legal at listed groups, banks, energy operators, and Spanish subsidiaries, over 24 months, 51 said the last hire was benchmarked to a Madrid elite-firm associate rung. A general counsel at an IBEX energy group told us: We had budgeted EUR 175,000 because London called that a junior number. The shortlist read it as counsel cash. That EUR 175,000 sits EUR 223 under the Garrigues counsel mean of EUR 175,223, and EUR 205 above the converted London base of EUR 174,795. It is not a junior offer on either comparison.
Company payroll, as distinct from this firm cell, is on the in-house counsel salary page for Madrid. The hiring calendar, including which seats slip a year, is on the Madrid legal-market page. The search itself, for a company, runs through in-house counsel recruiting in Madrid.
| Seat | Who earns it | Who pays it | Cash print | Instrument |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Convenio titled seat | A titled office worker on the convenio, not a commercial associate | A Madrid office bound by the 2026 Oficinas y Despachos table | EUR 21,826.70 | Collective agreement, BOCM 1 May 2026 |
| Elite junior, Madrid headquarters | Employed juniors at Garrigues, the Madrid corporate seat | The firm, in euros, on the 2025 sustainability table | EUR 46,009 | Employed relationship, not equity |
| Associate the company matches | Three-to-six-year lawyers leaving that lockstep | The company, benchmarking the rung the last hire left | EUR 61,120 | Ordinary employment once the lawyer moves in-house |
| Counsel, or a London conversion | Counsel on the employed table, or a City newly qualified solicitor | The firm for counsel; a UK headquarters if the conversion was pasted in | EUR 175,223 / EUR 174,795 | Two different payrolls, EUR 428 apart |
Your exposure is a wrong rung on a Madrid requisition, not an empty college.
- Write the euro cell first. Junior, associate, or counsel, against the 2025 Garrigues employed means. The census and the convenio floor are context. They are not the offer.
- Price Madrid offices in euros. Clifford Chance at EUR 84 million and Linklaters at EUR 86.8 million are Spain-market revenues. The London base does not travel with the name.
- Budget the counter-offer. Incidence on this associate book is 35 percent, which is 7 of 20. The defense is the employed cell the lawyer is leaving.
- Hold the signature window. The median from offer to acceptance is 9 working days. A committee that needs three weeks after a verbal yes is the delay.
- Open on the right product. Associate seats and in-house seats are both on this book. The company brief starts at a confidential hiring conversation.
Your 2025 print is a Madrid euro cell. A converted City number is a different payroll.
- Read the employed table. Counsel at EUR 175,223 is still an employed mean. Equity sits outside it.
- Do not brief the convenio. EUR 21,826.70 is the titled minimum. A commercial associate who anchors a move to that cell is describing a different job.
- Price the rung you are leaving. Companies in the cohort match that associate rung. They do not match 44,883 lawyers, and they do not match £150,000.
- Watch the signature clock. When a Madrid offer is real, it moves inside 9 working days. A process that cannot sign inside two weeks is usually still arguing about the rung.
The briefs that opened on the wrong price.
The Madrid associate files that had to be rewritten were the ones that opened on a London conversion. The pool was not the miss.
5 of the 20 files opened on the wrong rung. Sartori has worked this associate book for 5 years, for companies putting a lawyer on a Madrid payroll and for firms staffing the euro table those companies match. Quarterly surveys have run since 2019. The global research program maps 1,480,000+ lawyer profiles. The Madrid desk closed 20 associate searches over the trailing three years at a 92 percent completion rate, on a typical timeline of 6 to 12 weeks. Median offer-to-acceptance is 9 working days. Counter-offers hit 35 percent of the line, which is 7 of those 20.
Of those 20, 12 were Spanish-elite or Magic Circle Madrid seats paid in euros, and 8 were in-house at listed groups and at subsidiaries of foreign companies. 5 required a mid-process re-price after the original brief used a London newly qualified conversion as the Madrid associate band. 4 of those 5 ran past 12 weeks. The fifth signed in week 10. That is the finding that does not flatter the work. The shortlist had already reacted to the wrong number before the brief was pulled back. The pool was not the miss. The price was.
The week-10 file was a head of legal seat at an IBEX energy group. The requisition had been budgeted at EUR 175,000 and described, internally, as London-comparable junior cash. The shortlist read that figure as Spanish counsel money, which is what Garrigues counsel men earned in 2025, EUR 223 higher. The brief was rewritten onto an associate cell near EUR 61,120 and then signed. It is one of the 8 in-house files and one of the 5 re-prices. It is also the only one of those 5 that stayed inside the 6 to 12 week band.
A second in-house file, at the Spanish subsidiary of a UK-listed financial group, arrived with the £150,000 figure already converted. The Madrid head of legal wanted a three-to-five-year commercial lawyer for financing documents and the local panel. Walking group compensation off that conversion took 6 weeks, before the search itself behaved like the rest of the book. A head of legal at that subsidiary told us: The requisition arrived with the London figure already converted. We needed a three-to-five-year commercial lawyer, not a counsel package. One of the 12 firm seats, a Magic Circle Madrid finance associate, was briefed on the euro table from the first conversation and signed inside the same 6 to 12 week band. The difference was the first number on the paper.
Wrong first numberA signature
- Group pastes sterling A headquarters converts the London newly qualified base and calls it a Madrid junior. The euros land on counsel.
- The shortlist prices it Candidates who can do the work treat the figure as a counsel seat. The brief then has to be rewritten in front of them.
- The associate cell signs Once the paper matches the rung the lawyer is leaving, the offer moves inside the ordinary window.
- Q1 Is this a commercial associate or counsel seat, or a titled role on the office agreement? If it is the office agreement, stop at the convenio cell. Do not open an associate search.
- Q2 Is the lawyer leaving a Madrid headquarters, or is group compensation pasting a London base? If the true comparator is the City figure, you are pricing counsel. Say so, or rewrite the seat.
- Q3 Will the incumbent defend the employed cell the candidate is leaving? If yes, price that defense on the first bid. A census average will not answer it.
- → All three answered on the associate rung: bid the Madrid employed cell, keep the signature window short, and do not import a sterling lockstep to decorate the letter.
The research program behind these counts is described on our research page. A company that already knows the rung, and needs the seat filled, starts at a confidential hiring conversation. A lawyer weighing a letter starts from the employed cell, not from the college roll.
Lawyer salary in Madrid, 2026: questions from both sides of the letter
What is lawyer salary Madrid in 2026?
The commercial figure is Garrigues junior men at EUR 46,009 in the 2025 employed table El Confidencial compiled on 28 July 2026. That is the Madrid cell a company matches, not the Comunidad wage mean of EUR 34,410.01 and not a converted London newly qualified base. Sartori closed 20 Madrid associate searches over three years on that distinction.
How far is a Garrigues junior above the 2026 Madrid convenio floor?
Garrigues junior men at EUR 46,009 sit EUR 24,182.30 above the 2026 Grupo I.1 annual of EUR 21,826.70. The Boletín Oficial de la Comunidad de Madrid published that floor on 1 May 2026, at EUR 1,559.05 a month over 14 pays. The floor binds a titled office worker. It does not set an associate scale.
Do Magic Circle offices in Madrid pay the London newly qualified salary?
No: Clifford Chance Spain billed EUR 84 million in 2025, and Linklaters Spain EUR 86.8 million, Expansión reported on 20 April 2026. Those are euro revenues. The London base of £150,000 converts to EUR 174,795 at the ECB rate of 11 September 2026, which is counsel money on the Garrigues employed table, not a Madrid junior wage.
Is the ICAM census a lawyer salary table for Madrid?
No: ICAM’s 2025 memoria counts 44,883 practicing members out of 73,960 colegiados, and that roll is not a wage. The Abogados de Empresa section had 3,649 inscriptions at 31 March 2026, fewer than the family section at 5,612. Neither section publishes pay.
How fast does a Madrid associate offer close?
Sartori’s Madrid associate desk records a median of 9 working days from offer to acceptance, inside a typical 6 to 12 week search. Of 20 closed searches over three years, 7 drew a counter-offer. The line completes at 92 percent.
What should a general counsel in Madrid budget instead of a London conversion?
Budget the 2025 Garrigues associate mean for men, EUR 61,120, when the seat is three to six years. Of 76 in-house respondents in the Madrid cohort, 51 matched the last hire to an elite-firm associate rung. A converted £150,000 lands at EUR 174,795, EUR 428 under Garrigues counsel men at EUR 175,223.
College rolls, the convenio, Garrigues cells, and the exchange-rate tape.
The census is ICAM's 2025 memoria. The floor is the May 2026 convenio and the February 2026 minimum wage. Employed cash is the Garrigues table El Confidencial compiled on 28 July 2026. Sterling conversion uses the ECB reference of 11 September 2026.

Garrigues cash figures are 2025 employed means, not posted offers, and equity sits outside them. The convenio annual is 14 pays. ICAM section counts overlap. London newly qualified cash is the 2024 firm move still standing on the 4 December 2025 compilation. ECB rates are 11 September 2026, Official Journal C/2026/4605. Spain-market revenues are the Expansión ranking of 20 April 2026. DataInvex flows were published 20 March 2026 and exclude holding companies.
