Withers Salary 2026: Associate Scale, Bonus and Partner Pay
The 2026 London NQ cell is £95,000. The US first-year cell is $170,000. FY2026 profit per equity partner is £903,000. The premium narrative lives in the third number. The people who earn the first two, and the general counsel who has to match them, live in the first.
The NQ cell did not join the premium.
The 2026 Withers nq salary is £95,000 in London, the same sterling cell Legal Cheek published on 29 September 2025 and, earlier, on 11 November 2024. Sartori maps roughly 30,000 lawyers in London. That coverage is what makes a private-client shortlist tractable.
Legal Cheek listed Withers at £95,000 in its 29 September 2025 NQ table, and already had the same cell on 11 November 2024. The 2026–27 Firms Most List profile repeats it. Bonus is not in the cell. Unchanged through the pay war.

The 2026 Withers nq salary table, in two currencies.
Open the dated cells first. Everything else on this page is a read of what those cells do and do not buy - for the solicitor who earns them, and for the general counsel who has to match them.
Legal Cheek’s 29 September 2025 table “How much will I earn as a newly qualified solicitor?” puts Withers at £95,000 London NQ base, excluding bonus. Across the 100-plus outfits on that Firms Most List the average NQ salary stands at £118,756, a rise of nearly 5 percent on the prior report; the Withers cell is £23,756 below that 2025 average. The Maginot the cell does not clear is Magic Circle NQ at £150,000 on the same table, after the pay war Freshfields opened from £125,000. Eighteen US outfits in London pay NQs more than £170,000; the top of that table is £180,000 at Davis Polk, Gibson Dunn and Paul Weiss. Withers at £95,000 is 63 percent of Magic Circle NQ and 53 percent of that US-London ceiling.
The 2026 cell is not a 2026 raise. Legal Cheek’s 11 November 2024 rundown already listed Withers at £95,000. The firm did not join the 2024–25 NQ pay-war cohort. The 2026–27 Withers profile on Legal Cheek repeats the same three sterling cells: first-year trainee £47,000, second-year trainee £52,000, newly qualified £95,000. The firm’s own UK graduate brochure, with key dates running 1 October 2025 to 27 February 2026, confirms the two trainee cells as current salaries reviewed annually, plus a PGDL maintenance grant of £8,000 and an SQE (LLM) grant of £10,000. The brochure does not publish an NQ figure; the NQ cell is the Legal Cheek table.

Legal Cheek, 29 September 2025 ↗The US column is a different instrument. Withers’ “US summer associate program” page, accessed 11 September 2026, states that summer associates are paid a pro-rated first-year associate salary and that first-year associate compensation is currently set at $170,000 per year in its US offices. The page describes the 2027 summer program and a four-day in-office requirement. It does not publish a class-year ladder, a bonus scale, or a 2026 effective date. Keep it as a firm-stated first-year cell, not as a lockstep.
Ropes & Gray’s own recruiting disclosure, effective 1 January 2026, lists class-of-2026 / first-year US base at $225,000. Above the Law, 2 June 2026, reported Milbank raises of $10,000 to $20,000 by class year, effective 1 July 2026; the live scorecard of 5 June 2026 lists Milbank first-year at $235,000 and matches including McDermott, Quinn Emanuel, Katten, Sullivan & Cromwell and Norton Rose Fulbright. Withers does not appear on that match table. The $170,000 cell is $55,000 below the January 2026 floor and $65,000 below the July 2026 floor.
The only public US associate wage observations above $170,000 are Department of Labor Labor Condition Applications. Ellis’s compilation of OFLC records for Withers Bergman LLP, last updated April 2026, reports 15 Associate Attorney positions with a minimum of $160,000, a median of $189,987 and a maximum of $310,000. Dated certified rows include Associate Attorney $310,000 in San Francisco on 30 April 2026 and Associate Attorney $190,000 in New York on 30 April 2026. Those are wage attestations for sponsored roles. They are not a published lockstep, and they are not a reason to invent one.
A solicitor salary London comparison that stops at Magic Circle lockstep will misread this firm. The people who earn the Withers cell, and the in-house counsel who match it, are in a specialist private-client band. The national lockstep belongs to other pages on this site; this page owns the Withers cells and the contradiction they create.
PEP moved. The NQ cell did not.
Who earns the cell, and which general counsel has to match it.
The lawyers who earn the 2026 cells sit inside a law-firm private-client platform. The buyer who pays those cells is the firm. The buyer who matches them is a general counsel at a family office, a private trust company, a charity or a founder-led company.
Keep buying the panelPut a lawyer on the payroll
- Stay on the panel Tax, trusts and succession stay at a Band 1 London private-wealth team. The company writes a matter code, not a job description.
- Hire the junior seat The published NQ cell becomes a make-versus-buy ceiling for a first in-house private-client lawyer. Scope, reporting line and outside-counsel independence have to be written before the offer.
- Hire a Head of Legal A general counsel at a single- or multi-family office, a private trust company or a founder-led company. The NQ cell is context, not the package.
Withers describes itself as the largest law firm in the world focused on the needs of successful individuals and their business interests, with 220-plus partners and around 1,500 staff globally. The About page lists three Divisional CEOs — private client and tax, dispute resolution, and the business team — plus a Global Chair whose practice label is trust, estate and inheritance disputes. That is the org chart a chief legal officer is matching against: private client and tax, disputes, and a corporate/funds/employment book sitting under one private-capital firm.
Chambers High Net Worth 2026 is the practice-label map of who is actually buying this work. Withers’ 23 July 2026 announcement of the 2026 guide lists private wealth law; private wealth disputes; art and cultural property; family offices and funds structuring; defamation and reputation management for high-net-worth clients; family and matrimonial at both ultra-high-net-worth and high-net-worth; financial crime for high-net-worth individuals; immigration for high-net-worth individuals; landed estates; high-value residential real estate; and private client tax. The Chambers firm profile counts 28 ranked departments and 79 ranked individuals. London Private Wealth Law is Band 1: the team advises international and domestic ultra-high-net-worth clients on tax, wealth structuring and succession planning. Family Offices and Funds Structuring is a separate ranked hiring label — UK-wide Band 1, USA-Nationwide Band 2 — and the US write-up notes that the team assists with compensation structuring for family-office clients. That last clause is the in-house matching problem: the same firm that sells family-office structuring also drafts the employment and deferred-comp documents for the office’s own staff.
The employer’s family-office page names the company types without requiring a recruiter’s vacancy board: single-family offices; multi-family offices; founders; family businesses; private-equity funds as deal parties; philanthropic vehicles; private trust companies; domestic and international trusts and foundations. It states that the firm advises on where to situate the office and on the recruitment of key personnel, including the negotiation of employment agreements and the development of deferred compensation structures. That is the in-house seat: Head of Legal or first lawyer at a family office, hired by the family, with a Withers-tier firm as outside counsel on the employment contract. A private client lawyer salary conversation that never reaches that seat is only half the page.
| Buyer | Seat they are filling | What they buy from Withers-tier firms | The matching number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single- or multi-family office | First lawyer, Head of Legal, or General Counsel | Tax, wealth structuring, succession, office location, employment agreements for the office's own staff | London £95,000 or US $170,000 as a 1–4 PQE make-versus-buy ceiling |
| Private trust company or bank trustee | Fiduciary counsel | Trustee advice, trust conversions, offshore disputes, Court of Protection applications | The same cells, against a specialist fiduciary hire rather than a lockstep NQ |
| Charity or foundation legal director | Estates, legacy and will disputes | Contentious probate, landed-estate administration, charity-side private client | Junior private-client rate as a panel-versus-payroll decision |
| Founder-led private company | General Counsel buying employment, corporate and tax | Business-division work: employment, corporate, funds, liquidity events | Not the private-client NQ seat; price the Business-division laterals separately |
The NQ sits on a Private Client and Tax seat after four six-month rotations, not on a corporate general-counsel payroll.
- Seat menu is public. The 2025–26 graduate brochure lists charities; corporate; employment; family and divorce; intellectual property; litigation and arbitration; private client and tax; real estate; trust, estate and inheritance disputes; and white-collar defense and investigations, with a current secondment to Milan.
- London gates are statutory. The training page and brochure require a 2:1 degree or higher and minimum AAB at A-level. The Solicitors Regulation Authority’s August 2025 SQE route requires SQE1, SQE2, two years’ qualifying work experience and suitability checks. Withers transitioned trainees to SQE from September 2024. The LPC route remains open until 2032.
- US gates differ. A J.D. from an ABA-approved law school is the standard New York exam route; foreign-educated applicants must satisfy 22 NYCRR 520.6. ACTEC Fellowship is a senior trusts-and-estates credential — at least ten years predominantly in the practice — not an NQ requirement. Fellows Institutes are open to third- through sixth-year associates.
- New desks are not NQ. Art and Advisory launched in New York around a May 2025 lateral; the East Coast employment practice launched on 28 January 2026 with two partners and an of counsel from Outten & Golden. Both sell to the same high-net-worth population. Neither is the £95,000 London private-client NQ seat.
The company-side reader is not recruiting a Withers NQ onto a corporate lockstep. The matching exercise is make-versus-buy on tax, trusts and succession.
- Family offices hire last. UBS’s Global Family Office Report 2025, published 21 May 2025, surveyed 317 single family offices across more than 30 markets between 22 January and 4 April 2025. Average family net worth was USD 2.7 billion; offices managed an average USD 1.1 billion. Only 53 percent had wealth succession plans. Among those with plans, 64 percent named tax-efficient transfer as the greatest challenge. That is demand for the Private Client and Tax and Family Offices desks, and a reason a family office hires a general counsel rather than running entirely on external counsel.
- Fiduciaries are a second employer class. The trustees page names executors, trustees, protectors, private fiduciaries, Court of Protection applicants and charities taking under wills, plus an in-house trust corporation (WITCO) that can act as executor or trustee for UK wills and trusts. Worked matters on that page include BVI trusts in excess of US$400 million and a Cyprus-based trustee defending USD 150 million of beneficiary claims in the BVI Commercial Court. Those are forums, not a headcount.
- The contract sits opposite. If the family office is hiring its first lawyer, a Withers-tier firm may be drafting the offer. Budget independence as a scoping question, not as a cultural preference.
Withers partner salary is public as PEP, not as a drawing.
The premium narrative is a profit number. The NQ cell is a wage. Reading one as proof of the other is how this table gets mis-sold.
Trainee grantEquity average
- Trainee cells Employer-stated, reviewed annually, printed in the graduate brochure. The grants sit beside them. This is the only part of the ladder the firm publishes itself.
- The NQ cell A Legal Cheek table, repeated on the firm profile, unchanged through a pay war and a 26 percent PEP jump. Bonus omitted. PQE omitted.
- PEP as proxy A ratio: distributable profit divided by equity partners. It moved. It is not a partner drawing, and it is not a reason the NQ cell should have moved with it.
The Global Legal Post, 24 July 2026, reported Withers FY2026 revenue of £357.5 million, up 10.7 percent, profit of £83.6 million, up 28.6 percent, and PEP of £903,000, up 26.2 percent. Two-year: revenue up 17.8 percent, PEP up 53.3 percent. EPrivateClient, 27 July 2026, supplies the prior-year denominators: revenue £322.8 million and profit £65 million in 2024–25. The Legal Cheek Withers profile, accessed 11 September 2026, puts the premium in one paragraph: representing the wealthy pays well; firmwide revenues rose 11 percent to £357.5 million; profits soared 29 percent to £83.6 million; average profit per equity partner rose 26 percent to £903,000. The NQ cell on the same page is £95,000. That is the contradiction the opening angle assigned this page: PEP and revenue moved; the NQ cell did not.
Last July the firm promoted 16 lawyers to partnership, 10 of them in the US, across international tax planning, trust and estate litigation, family law and aircraft sales, per the same 24 July 2026 Global Legal Post report. Those are the practice labels that converted associates into partners in FY2026 — the seniority the NQ cell is supposed to lead toward. They are not a published associate scale.
Hours are a utilization target, not a bonus gate. The Legal Cheek 2026–27 Withers profile lists annual target hours of 1,400, with a survey-derived average start of 08:53 and finish of 18:50 from the Trainee and Junior Lawyer Survey 2026–27 of over 2,000 UK trainees and junior associates. Above the Law’s 2026 raise scorecard lists 2,000-hour bonus minima at several matching US firms (McDermott, Quinn Emanuel, Katten) and 1,900 at Norton Rose Fulbright and Groom Law Group. Withers’ 1,400 is not those gates. Comparing them as if they were the same instrument is how a US general counsel overpays the story and underpays the seat.
Bonus existence without a Withers bonus scale is the statutory residue. The Withers Professional Services Limited gender-pay-gap statement 2024/25, snapshot 5 April 2024, records an employee mean bonus gap of 64.0 percent (2023: 64.3 percent) and a median bonus gap of 25.9 percent (2023: 17.1 percent). In the twelve months before that snapshot, 73.3 percent of men and 72.6 percent of women received a bonus. The firm states it uses a system of partnership points alongside bonus payments for partners, and that a small number of large bonus payments go to senior levels. Mean fee-earner gender pay gap is 3.1 percent “in part due to our pay scale structure” — which confirms a fee-earner scale exists and does not disclose the rungs. Employee mean gender pay gap was 18.2 percent (2023: 29.6 percent); London partners were 44.1 percent female. None of those percentages is a compensation band.
A family-office general counsel matching this cell is pricing a tax-and-trust hire, not a Magic Circle lockstep.
The demand under the cell is a statute stack, not a pay war.
The 2026 NQ cell did not move because Magic Circle lockstep moved. The desks that sit under it moved because the tax code did.
UK Finance Act 2025 section 44, in force 6 April 2025, substitutes “long-term UK resident” for the domicile test in IHTA 1984 section 6. New sections 6A to 6C define the 10-of-20 test and a tapering tail after exit. GOV.UK’s tax information and impact note of 30 October 2024 replaces the remittance basis with a residence-based regime from that date: a four-year 100 percent relief on foreign income and gains for new arrivals who were not UK resident in the prior ten years; a Temporary Repatriation Facility for three tax years from 2025–26 at 12 percent then 15 percent; inheritance tax moved to the long-term-residence test. Affected: about 14,800 FIG-eligible individuals and about 9,300 who lose preferential treatment, plus trustees of settlor-interested trusts. Exchequer yield, OBR-certified from Autumn Budget 2024 Table 5.1: £4.170 billion in 2026–27 and £5.895 billion in 2027–28. That is associate-and-counsel work on FIG claims, TRF designations and excluded-property trust reviews through the last TRF year. It is not a reason to raise the 12-person NQ cohort as a class.
From 6 April 2026, Agricultural and Business Property Relief is capped: 100 percent on a combined allowance the government raised, on 23 December 2025, from £1 million to £2.5 million per estate (transferable, so up to £5 million for spouses). Estates claiming APR, including those also claiming BPR, affected in 2026–27 fall from 375 to 185; overall estates paying more IHT in 2026–27 now up to 1,100. That is a landed-estates and family-business mandate at 4–8 PQE and partner, clustering in the first half of 2026 before the start date. It is not an NQ volume spike. The IHT nil-rate band remains £325,000, frozen since 2009–10, with the freeze extended through 2030–31; the residence nil-rate band is £175,000. HMRC’s annual bulletin, updated 22 May 2026, records inheritance-tax cash receipts of £8.5 billion in 2025–26, up from £3.5 billion in 2006–07. The monthly bulletin of 21 August 2026 puts April–July 2026 IHT at £3.2 billion, with June 2026 receipts the highest on record. Those figures size the UK private-client tax base. They are not a Withers billing number.
In the United States the 2025 sunset panic is over. The IRS page “What’s new — Estate and gift tax,” last reviewed 23 July 2026, records that Public Law 119-21, signed 4 July 2025, amends IRC section 2010(c)(3) to a $15,000,000 basic exclusion for calendar year 2026 (2025: $13,990,000). The annual gift-tax exclusion is $19,000 in both years. Covered-expatriate tax under IRC section 2801 applies to covered gifts and bequests received on or after 1 January 2025. Davis Polk’s 14 July 2025 client update, used here only to gloss the primary IRS page, notes there is no expiration date on the new $15 million, the 40 percent top rate is unchanged, and New York’s estate-tax exemption equivalent was then $7.16 million with a 100–105 percent cliff. US Trusts and Estates hiring in 2026 is a review-and-gift cycle, not a crash, and it does not move the published $170,000 first-year cell.
Singapore is a Withers KhattarWong window, not a neighboring-city article. MAS FAQs issued 12 June 2026 put the single-family-office licensing exemption live from 15 June 2026; existing offices have until 15 June 2027 to file. The SFO must be Singapore-incorporated; it may fund only family members (five-generation definition), family charities and key employees, with key-employee assets at or under 10 percent of AUM. Rajah & Tann, 15 June 2026, restates commencement and the 2027 transition. That is Family Offices and Funds Structuring work for Singapore associates through June 2027. It is not the London NQ lockstep.
Overlay, not a pay-war: Companies House identity verification runs from 18 November 2025 to mid-November 2026, with 6 to 7 million individuals in scope, per the 5 August 2025 Companies House news. Failure-to-prevent-fraud under Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023 section 199 has been in force since 1 September 2025 for large organizations. Kroupeeva v Kroupeev [2026] EWFC 85, judgment 25 March 2026, as summarized by the Financial Remedies Journal on 21 May 2026, inferred a pot just under £305 million and awarded £100.6 million, holding a nuptial settlement variable under Matrimonial Causes Act 1973 section 24(1)(c) through the corporate stack. That is Family/Matrimonial UHNW and Private Wealth Disputes work for seniors. NQs in family seats see more bundling and disclosure fights, not a pay rise. Home Office guidance version 20.0, published 11 November 2025, sets 17 February 2026 as the last date for remaining Tier 1 (Investor) extensions; the route closed to new initial applications at 16:00 on 17 February 2022. Immigration: HNW Individuals shifts from investor-visa files to Innovator Founder, Global Talent and tax-residence planning around FIG.
Under all of that sits a multi-year stock, not a 2026 raise. UBS Global Wealth Report 2025 estimates a great wealth transfer of USD 83 trillion over the next 20 to 25 years. End-2024: about 52 million people with USD 1–5 million holding around USD 107 trillion; people with more than USD 5 million holding around USD 119 trillion; 2,891 USD billionaires in the sample. Knight Frank The Wealth Report 2025 recorded a 4.4 percent rise in 2024 in the number of individuals worth over USD 10 million, with North America at 5.2 percent. That stock is the floor under 12 London training contracts and a US summer class. It does not justify reading the NQ cell as Cravath-scale. It does justify keeping Private Client and Tax as the firm’s core.
Price the hire off the published cell, then interrogate what the cell hides.
Sartori has worked the London associate market for more than ten years, for law firms and for companies that hire private-client and in-house counsel. Over the trailing three years we closed 33 associate searches at a 93 percent completion rate, on a typical timeline of 6 to 12 weeks.
Of those 33 closed London associate searches over three years, 11 were private-client, tax, family or trusts seats at years 1–4. Seven of those eleven closed inside the 6-to-12-week band; four ran past it because the published NQ cell could not be reconciled with an unpublished PQE ladder. On those 11 files, four drew a counter-offer — inside the 35 percent London associate incidence we record across the 33. Median offer-to-acceptance on the London associate line is 12 working days. The private-client files did not beat that clock; they spent it arguing about hours mix and bonus opacity rather than about the base.
In that London interview cohort, 58 of 96 private-client and private-wealth associates over a 24-month window said their NQ base was set against the specialist high-net-worth peer band, not against Magic Circle lockstep. A general counsel at a London multi-family office told us they use the published NQ cell as a ceiling for a first in-house private-client hire, not as a Withers-lateral target. A head of talent at a UK-headquartered high-net-worth law firm told us they will not publish a PQE ladder because the NQ cell already walks into family-office offer letters. Both are role-and-type descriptions. Neither is a named person.
Two anonymized composites from that same book. A European multi-family office with a London principal office briefed a first-lawyer hire: two years’ private-client post-qualification, tax and succession, reporting to the principal, outside counsel remaining on a Withers-tier panel for the cross-border trust work. We priced the seat off the £95,000 NQ cell as a ceiling, not as a floor, and closed in nine weeks. The incumbent firm counter-offered on title and a discretionary bonus; the candidate took the in-house seat because hours were not the point — the point was a single family’s book rather than a lockstep. A US independent trust company compared hiring a US-qualified tax associate at the $170,000 first-year cell against another year of panel spend on grantor-trust conversions. The search closed in eight weeks on a senior-associate, not an NQ, because the published first-year cell was the wrong seniority for the work. Both files sat inside the 33. Neither named a family, a firm or a candidate.
Quarterly surveys have run since 2019 across the global research program, which maps nearly 1.5 million lawyer profiles. If you are a chief legal officer writing the requisition, the practical sequence is: name the work a 1–4 PQE can own in the first ninety days; decide whether Withers-tier outside counsel stays on the employment agreement; put the published cell in the compensation paper as a ceiling; and do not ask us to invent a PQE ladder the firm has not published. The service view of the company-side hire sits on our in-house counsel recruiting page; London coverage sits on legal recruiters in London; the associate-line mechanics sit on associate recruiting. Companies hiring a first general counsel rather than a first private-client lawyer should start with first general counsel search instead.
What this table will not invent.
A figure that is not on a page is omitted. Saying so is the finding. Estimating a PQE ladder to complete the graphic is how salary pages become fiction.
On three of the 11 private-client associate files, the first name we put forward failed hours-mix verification: the CV sold family and tax; the last two seats were corporate and real estate. We replaced the name and still closed the file. Those three were among the four that ran past the 6-to-12-week band. That is the finding that does not flatter the desk. A published NQ cell is easy to match on a spreadsheet and expensive to match on a file that cannot survive a seat-by-seat read. The general counsel who treats £95,000 as proof the candidate has done the work is making the same mistake in reverse.
Competitive pressure on the US private-client bench is real and is not a statute. The Global Legal Post, 24 July 2026, recorded that Charles Russell Speechlys hired a six-partner private-client team earlier that month to launch in New York and New Haven — the same Connecticut city as Withers Bergman’s historic US base. Charles Russell Speechlys London NQ was £93,000 on the 29 September 2025 Legal Cheek table. That is a second specialist firm becoming a US buyer of the same talent. It is a retention risk at partner and special-counsel level in the second half of 2026. It is not a reason the unpublished $170,000 first-year cell has moved.
Who occupies the seats, not a hiring conclusion: Legal Cheek’s Withers profile lists UK female associates at 71 percent and UK female partners at 48 percent. The firm’s DEI page states 45 percent of partners are women, 66 percent of people are women, and 21 percent of disclosers identify as non-white. Those percentages describe the earning population. They do not price the cell.
For the US lockstep this page used only as a Maginot, see the 2026 BigLaw associate salary scale. For London partner economics beyond a single PEP cell, see partner pay at London law firms and law firm partner salary London 2026. For the city-wide solicitor map, see lawyer salary London 2026. This page does not restate those tables. It owns the Withers cells, the contradiction with PEP, and the matching problem for a family-office or trust-company general counsel.
Withers salary 2026: common questions
What is the Withers nq salary in 2026?
The 2026 London cell is £95,000 base, excluding bonus. Legal Cheek listed that figure on 29 September 2025 and already had Withers at £95,000 on 11 November 2024, so the cell did not move with the Magic Circle pay war that took A&O Shearman, Clifford Chance, Freshfields, Linklaters and Slaughter and May to £150,000. The same £95,000 sits on the 2026–27 Firms Most List Withers profile. No NQ bonus amount is public. A family-office general counsel matching the cell is pricing a 1–4 PQE tax-and-trust hire, not a Magic Circle lockstep.
What does Withers pay a first-year associate in the United States?
The firm-stated US first-year base is $170,000, with no 2026 effective date on the page. Withers’ summer-associate page, accessed 11 September 2026, says summer associates are paid a pro-rated first-year salary and that first-year compensation is currently set at $170,000 in its US offices. Ropes & Gray disclosed a $225,000 US first-year base effective 1 January 2026; Milbank moved the matching first-year cell to $235,000 effective 1 July 2026. Withers does not appear on the June 2026 match table. No US class-year ladder is published.
What is the Withers partner salary in 2026?
The only public partner figure is FY2026 profit per equity partner of £903,000, up 26.2 percent. The Global Legal Post reported that cell on 24 July 2026, with revenue of £357.5 million and profit of £83.6 million. Individual drawings, points and guaranteed laterals are not public. A gender-pay-gap statement for Withers Professional Services Limited (snapshot 5 April 2024) confirms partners sit on a points-and-bonus system; it does not disclose a sterling drawing. PEP is an average, not a paycheck.
Does Withers publish an associate bonus or a PQE scale?
No. Neither an NQ bonus amount nor a PQE associate ladder is on any public page opened for this article. The 2024/25 gender-pay-gap statement records that 73.3 percent of men and 72.6 percent of women received a bonus in the twelve months before 5 April 2024, and that a fee-earner pay-scale structure exists; it does not publish the rungs or a bonus percentage of base. Treat those as proof that variable pay exists, not as a compensation band.
How should a family-office general counsel match the 2026 Withers NQ cell?
Use £95,000 in London or $170,000 in the US as a 1–4 PQE make-versus-buy ceiling, not as a Magic Circle lockstep. The lawyer who earns that cell sits on a Private Client and Tax seat inside a ~650-lawyer HNW platform. The company-side reader is deciding whether to hire that lawyer onto the family-office or trust-company payroll or to keep buying the same tax, trust and succession work from a Band 1 London private-wealth team. Withers’ own family-office page already describes advising those offices on recruiting key personnel and negotiating employment agreements — so the firm is on the other side of the in-house hire.
What is a Withers trainee paid in London, and how many qualify?
First-year trainees are paid £47,000 and second-year trainees £52,000, per the firm’s 2025–26 graduate brochure. Legal Cheek’s 2026–27 profile repeats those cells, lists 12 training contracts, and states a latest trainee retention rate of 80 percent. A separate Legal Cheek report on 21 July 2025 recorded 9 of 14 qualifying trainees staying that summer. Those are two vintages; they are not one rate. Qualifying does not disclose the NQ bonus.
Legal Cheek tables, firm filings, HMRC receipts and the statutes under the desks.
NQ and trainee cells come from Legal Cheek and from the employer's own graduate brochure. PEP and revenue come from The Global Legal Post and EPrivateClient. US first-year is the firm's summer-associate page. Statutory demand comes from the Act, the IRS page and the MAS FAQs. Sartori figures come from the London associate research program.

Sterling and dollar cells are never converted. The 21 July 2025 9-of-14 retention and the later 80 percent profile figure are two vintages. DOL LCA maxima are single-role attestations, not a class-year ladder. PEP is an average, not a partner drawing. In-house pay bands advertised only on search-firm pages are omitted.
Our own numbers — the London interview cohort, the associate mandate telemetry, the counter-offer incidence and the offer-to-acceptance window — come from the continuous research program described on our research page, which sets out the cohorts, the survey waves and the mapping coverage behind every Sartori figure quoted above.
