Interim legal talent Paris is day-rate and portage cover for a general counsel who cannot wait on a permanent directeur juridique. Sartori & Partners closed 32 Paris interim searches over the trailing three years, at a 93 percent completion rate, on a 2-to-5-week file. A Euronext-listed industrial group in Paris had an interim compliance counsel on an AMF inspection in week 3. The Ministry of Justice counted 32,729 Paris-bar avocats on 1 January 2024, in a release published 9 June 2026. The AMF opened 59 inspections in 2025.

01 — The brief answer

Paris interim demand is a seat gap with a statute attached, not a spare résumé.

Interim legal talent Paris is the brief a general counsel, a chief compliance officer, or a chief operating officer sends when a directeur juridique seat, a compliance project, or a deal calendar cannot wait for a permanent hire. Sartori & Partners has worked this interim line for 8 years. Over the trailing three years we closed 32 Paris interim searches at a 93 percent completion rate. The file runs 2 to 5 weeks from signed brief to counsel on the matter.

That city clock is not the firm-wide start clock. Across 60+ interim and fractional engagements since 2017, the median from first call to start is 7 days. A Series C fintech in San Francisco had an interim general counsel live on day 6. The Paris book is slower because the contract vehicle, the conflicts list, and the 2026 confidentiality statute have to be chosen before anyone starts. Written offer to acceptance on the Paris line is 7 working days. A counter-offer lands on 20 percent of accepted shortlists.

The firm-wide count of 60+ is the published total since 2017. It is not a sum of city pages, and it is not this Paris line of 32. A later permanent general-counsel search, if the company still wants one, is a different book: 52 GC and CLO placements inside 400+ placements since 2017 (230+ in-house), a shortlist in 24 days, and a median accepted offer in 11 weeks. The parent method is interim and contract counsel. The Paris market map sits on legal recruitment in Paris.

02 — The local market

The Paris bar is large. The company seat is a different profession.

The Ministry of Justice, in its April 2026 report on the profession, posted on 9 June 2026, counted 32,729 avocats at the Paris bar on 1 January 2024. That is 43.2 percent of 75,681 avocats in France. Inside the Paris figure, 12,787 were collaborateurs (39.1 percent), 10,021 practiced individually (30.6 percent), 9,711 were associés (29.7 percent), and 210 were salaried (0.6 percent). Those are advocates. A company hiring interim legal talent in Paris is usually hiring a juriste d'entreprise, who is not on that roll.

Sartori & Partners maps 9,000 lawyers in Paris, inside a research map of 1,480,000+ lawyers. The buyer on this page is the legal department, not a law-firm partnership. The employers who brief interim work are Euronext-listed groups, CAC 40 and SBF 120 issuers, asset managers under AMF supervision, and private-equity portfolio companies with a Paris headquarters. The wider market context is on the Paris legal market in 2026.

Loi n° 2026-122 of 23 February 2026 attaches confidentiality to a consultation that meets five conditions: a master in law or equivalent, an ethics course set by joint order, a destination limited to the legal representative and the group's governing bodies, a personalized legal opinion, and the mention "confidentiel - consultation juridique - juriste d'entreprise". It enters into force on a date set by decree, and no later than 1 February 2027. It does not apply in criminal proceedings, tax proceedings, or before a European Union authority. An interim counsel can draft under that mention only when the statute's employment test is met. A person employed by a portage firm is not, on the face of the text, the juriste the client company employs.

Enforcement volume is already on the 2025 docket. The AMF's annual report for 2025, French release 28 May 2026 and English page 4 June 2026, records 59 inspections opened, 36 investigations opened, 13 enforcement decisions totaling 14.5 million euros, 18 settlement agreements totaling 4.38 million euros, and 671 asset management companies monitored. An AMF study dated October 2025 reviewed sustainability statements from 91 issuers, 33 from the CAC 40 and 58 from the SBF 120. That is the compliance and reporting load a chief compliance officer covers with project counsel when the permanent bench is full.

PARIS × INTERIM LEGAL TALENT 3 ENGAGEMENTS · ANONYMIZED

Interim compliance counsel for an AMF inspection

Euronext-listed industrial group, Paris

Mandate
One interim compliance counsel for an open AMF inspection, reporting to the sitting directeur juridique, with a written conflicts list before the first interview.
Complication
A portage contract could not carry the confidentiality mention the general counsel wanted on the inspection memo. Two candidates priced a day rate the company would not sign.
Outcome
The counsel was employed on a fixed-term contract under the sitting directeur juridique. The inspection memo was in the file in week 3.

Fractional directeur juridique for a portfolio company

PE-backed consumer group, Paris

Mandate
A fractional directeur juridique, two days a week, for commercial contracts and a financing, with a review of a permanent seat at month six.
Complication
The first draft was silent on who signed outside-counsel invoices. Two finalists declined until that line was rewritten.
Outcome
Closed on a monthly retainer with written signing authority. Counsel was on the work in week 4.

Carve-out counsel for a listed energy group

Listed energy group, Paris

Mandate
One transaction counsel for a carve-out, SPA schedules and a transition-services agreement, for a fixed number of weeks.
Complication
Two shortlisted lawyers had acted against a named counterparty on the sale. The conflicts grid had to be rewritten before the offer.
Outcome
Placed a counsel who cleared the grid. On the work in week 2, inside the 2-to-5-week line.

04 — Sector mix

Four kinds of Paris interim file, and only one of them is a fractional title.

Of the 32 Paris interim searches closed over the trailing three years, 12 were transaction-surge seats, 8 were regulatory and compliance projects, 7 were leave or vacancy cover, and 5 were fractional directeur juridique seats. Those four counts add to 32. Fractional title is the smallest slice.

  • Transaction surge. 12 files. Diligence, financing documents, fund work, or a carve-out with a dated signing. The listed energy carve-out above closed inside this slice, on the work in week 2.
  • Regulatory and compliance. 8 files. AMF inspections, asset-manager controls, and sustainability-statement work of the kind the October 2025 AMF study measured across 91 issuers. The Euronext industrial inspection file is in this slice, live in week 3.
  • Leave or vacancy cover. 7 files. A directeur juridique or a senior juriste is out, and the matter list does not pause. These are the files that usually need a fixed-term contract with the company, not portage.
  • Fractional directeur juridique. 5 files. Two or three days a week for a portfolio company that has not funded a full-time seat. The PE-backed consumer file was on the work in week 4.

Across 250 structured interviews with Paris counsel, 71 said the contract vehicle, not the day rate, was the reason a prior project conversation died. That is one cut of one cohort. It is not a second interview count.

Portage is a real market around that choice, and it is not a legal-department headcount. The 2025 branch report of the portage employers' federation, using 2022 administrative data, counted 43,127 ported employees in France, 518 active portage firms, and sector turnover of 2.05 billion euros. Those figures cover every profession. They size the vehicle. They do not size the Paris interim legal book of 32.

05 — Compensation

Price the seat against a company payroll, not against a collaborator floor.

APEC's Baromètre 2025, published November 2025 for pay as of June 2025, puts the median annual gross pay of cadres in Île-de-France at 60,000 euros, across every function. In that region the mixed family Administratif, organisation et juridique is 56,000 euros, against 51,000 euros for the family nationally. The sector Activités juridiques et comptables is 59,000 euros in Île-de-France and 52,000 euros nationally. The 2024 APEC survey of legal métiers, published by Challenges, put the national median at 52,000 euros a year in fixed plus variable pay, with 80 percent of that family between 39,000 and 79,000 euros, and an Île-de-France band of 40,000 to 82,000 euros. That family includes legal assistants, advocates, debt-collection officers, notaries' clerks, contract managers, tax specialists, juristes, notaries, and heads of legal. It is not a Paris directeur juridique package, and it is not a day rate.

Company-seat bands for a permanent hire are on in-house counsel salary in Paris, 2026, general counsel salary in Paris, 2026, and lawyer salary in France, 2026. Use those pages for the payroll comparison. An interim engagement is not that payroll. It is a day-rate or a monthly retainer. Days billed on the interim engagement credit against a later retained fee. The retained fee, if the company then hires permanently, is 25–30 percent of the hire's total first-year compensation. Thirty percent of that fee is paid as a retainer at engagement and kept if the client cancels. There is no euro day-rate band on this page, because no official 2026 schedule prints one for this seat.

On the 32 closed Paris interim searches, a counter-offer landed on 20 percent of accepted shortlists. The counter is usually a permanent contract, or a base increase, that does not move the start date. Median time from written offer to acceptance, once the vehicle and the start date are on the page, is 7 working days. The comparison between interim and permanent, as a decision rather than a rate card, is on interim versus permanent in-house counsel.

06 — Timeline

Two clocks, plus two statutes that cap how long the seat can last.

Read the clocks as different instruments. The Paris interim line, on 32 closed searches over the trailing three years, runs 2 to 5 weeks from signed brief to counsel on the matter, at a 93 percent completion rate. Written offer to acceptance is 7 working days. The firm-wide median from first call to start is 7 days across 60+ interim and fractional engagements since 2017. A Paris listed-company file that still has to choose between portage and a fixed-term contract does not inherit that 7-day start.

The statutes cap the engagement after it starts. Article L.1254-4 II of the Labor Code provides that a portage assignment at the client may not exceed 36 months. The text has been in force since 4 April 2015 and is unchanged on the consolidation dated 28 January 2026. Absent a branch agreement under article L.1242-8, article L.1242-8-1 sets the ordinary ceiling of a fixed-term contract at 18 months, including renewal. A contract to replace an absent employee is a permitted ground under article L.1242-2, and article L.1242-7 allows it to end when the absence ends. Leave cover, 7 of the 32, is the slice that usually uses that ground.

Loi n° 2026-122 does not shorten those caps. It changes what the memo is worth. From a decree date, and no later than 1 February 2027, a consultation that meets the statute can be withheld in civil, commercial, and administrative proceedings. It still cannot be opposed in criminal proceedings, tax proceedings, or before a European Union authority. A chief compliance officer briefing an AMF inspection in 2026 should decide the vehicle before the first draft, not after the mention is already on the page. The Euronext-listed industrial file did that, and counsel was on the inspection in week 3.

07 — How a search runs

The first written choice is the contract, not the candidate's last title.

A Paris interim search opens on a written brief: the matter list, the seniority, whether the person must be a juriste the company employs, the day-rate or retainer authority, the conflicts that are not negotiable, and a start inside 2 to 5 weeks. Mapping then runs against the Paris coverage of 9,000 lawyers and the wider map of 1,480,000+. Names do not go to the client until interest, the vehicle, and the conflicts grid are checked.

Rate talks stay inside the authority the general counsel will actually sign. We do not float a package the company has not approved. Counter-offer planning assumes the 20 percent incidence on accepted shortlists. Close runs through acceptance, the employment or portage paperwork, and a check once the counsel is on the matter. The same discipline, over the trailing three years, produced 32 completed Paris interim searches at a 93 percent completion rate.

The inspection memo could not sit on a portage contract. We employed the counsel on a fixed-term contract under the sitting directeur juridique, and the file was live in week three. That file is the week-3 engagement above. It is not the San Francisco interim general counsel who was live on day 6. A named-officer interim, if that is the product, is an interim general counsel search. The running order of a search is in our methodology.

09 — Questions

Interim legal talent in Paris — common questions

Who are the best interim legal talent firms in Paris?

No independent ranking of interim legal talent in Paris exists, so the useful test is mapped coverage, the contract vehicle, and searches actually closed. Sartori & Partners maps roughly 9,000 lawyers in Paris and has worked this interim line for 8 years. Over the trailing three years we closed 32 Paris interim searches at a 93 percent completion rate, on a 2-to-5-week file. A Euronext-listed industrial group in Paris had an interim compliance counsel on an AMF inspection in week 3. Cohort method is on the research program. The city hub is legal recruitment in Paris.

How long does interim legal talent Paris usually take?

The Paris interim line runs 2 to 5 weeks from signed brief to counsel on the matter, across 32 closed searches over the trailing three years, at a 93 percent completion rate. Median time from written offer to acceptance is 7 working days. A counter-offer lands on 20 percent of accepted shortlists. That offer clock is not the firm-wide median of 7 days from first call to start across 60+ interim and fractional engagements since 2017. A listed energy group in Paris had carve-out counsel on the work in week 2.

What should a Paris interim brief be priced against?

No bar schedule prints a 2026 day rate for a Paris directeur juridique. APEC's Baromètre 2025, published November 2025 for pay as of June 2025, puts the Île-de-France median for all cadres at 60,000 euros a year. In that region the mixed family Administratif, organisation et juridique is 56,000 euros, against 51,000 euros nationally. The sector Activités juridiques et comptables is 59,000 euros in Île-de-France and 52,000 euros nationally. None of these cells is a Paris general-counsel package. Company-seat bands are on in-house counsel salary in Paris, 2026 and general counsel salary in Paris, 2026. The engagement itself is a day-rate or a monthly retainer. Days billed credit against a later retained fee of 25–30 percent of first-year total compensation. Thirty percent of that fee is the retainer, kept if the client cancels.

Should Paris interim counsel sit on portage or on a fixed-term contract?

The vehicle decides the clock and whether a written consultation can carry the 2026 confidentiality mention. Article L.1254-4 of the Labor Code, in force since 4 April 2015, caps a portage assignment at the client at 36 months. Absent a branch agreement under article L.1242-8, article L.1242-8-1 sets the ordinary fixed-term ceiling at 18 months, including renewal. A contract that replaces an absent employee may end when the absence ends (articles L.1242-2 and L.1242-7). Loi n° 2026-122 of 23 February 2026, in force by decree and no later than 1 February 2027, attaches confidentiality to a consultation written by a juriste the company employs, or by a team member under that juriste's authority. A portage employee is employed by the portage firm. Of 32 closed Paris interim searches, 7 were leave or vacancy cover, the files where a fixed-term contract with the company is the usual vehicle.

Which Paris sectors hire interim legal talent?

Of 32 closed Paris interim searches over the trailing three years, 12 were transaction-surge seats, 8 were regulatory and compliance projects, 7 were leave or vacancy cover, and 5 were fractional directeur juridique seats. The public demand behind that mix is dated separately. The AMF's 2025 annual report, French release 28 May 2026 and English page 4 June 2026, records 59 inspections opened, 36 investigations opened, and 671 asset management companies monitored. An AMF study of October 2025 reviewed sustainability statements from 91 CAC 40 and SBF 120 issuers.

When is a permanent directeur juridique the right Paris brief?

When board reporting, the confidentiality mention under loi n° 2026-122, and a seat that outlasts 36 months are already funded. A permanent general-counsel search is a different book: 52 GC and CLO placements inside 400+ placements since 2017 (230+ in-house), a shortlist in 24 days, and a median accepted offer in 11 weeks, with a 12-month replacement. The Paris in-house page is separate from this interim line of 32. Start at in-house counsel recruiting or interim general counsel if the title on the door is the product.
