Lateral partner recruiting in Las Vegas

Retained search for a Las Vegas firm hiring a partner already in practice: the Nevada license, the client’s own decision, the pay pages, and the clock from brief to acceptance.

A firm uses lateral partner recruiting Las Vegas when it needs a partner already in practice. The nearest published partner line, Los Angeles, closed 20 searches over three years, with a counter-offer on 41 percent and 15 working days from offer to acceptance. A Nevada litigation firm in Las Vegas hired a gaming-disputes partner in 6 months, inside 4 to 7 months. The State Bar of Nevada’s 2025 report counted 9,596 active attorneys. O*NET’s 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics table puts the Las Vegas lawyer median at $150,510. Nevada’s licensing rules changed on 19 January 2026.

01 — The brief answer

A Las Vegas lateral is a Nevada license, a client decision, and a start date the statute does not set.

Lateral partner recruiting Las Vegas is instructed when a hiring partner already knows the gap and does not want the gap described in the market. The person who fits is usually a partner somewhere else, still bound by that agreement, still the face of clients whose retainer is with the firm and not with the individual. The search ends at an accepted offer. Notice, any garden leave, and any restriction on whom the partner may call run after that, on the instrument the candidate already signed. Nevada does not supply a substitute notice period if that instrument is silent.

That is the work lateral partner recruiting is retained to do here. Sartori & Partners was founded in early 2017 by Lorenzo Sartori. The California hubs, Los Angeles and San Francisco, opened in 2024. There is no Las Vegas office and no Las Vegas closed-search count. The nearest published partner line is Los Angeles, and it has been worked for more than 10 years. Closed searches on that line, over the last three years, stand at 20. The firm-wide partner record published beside that count is 2,600+ partner conversations. The 20 are the three-year Los Angeles count, used because Las Vegas has no row. The 2,600+ are not a Las Vegas placement total, and they are not a second interview cohort.

02 — The license, not the skyline

Clark County holds half the licenses. It does not hold a waiver.

The State Bar of Nevada’s 2025 annual report counts 9,596 active attorneys. The same report puts 50.13 percent of licenses in Clark County, 13.21 percent in Washoe County, 2.38 percent in Carson City, 2.84 percent in rural counties, and 31.44 percent out of state. Those are license locations. They are not a count of partners, and they are not a count of lawyers in private practice. An out-of-state license is 31.44 percent of the roll. It is not a Nevada practice, and it is not a person who can open a Las Vegas matter on the day of resignation.

The State Bar’s admission page states that Nevada does not offer an attorney exam, reciprocity, or admission by motion. The Nevada Plan took effect on 19 January 2026. The order, ADKT No. 629, was filed on 18 December 2025. The current Nevada bar examination continues through the July 2026 administration, which the State Bar describes as the last of that examination. The Plan’s components are the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination, the Foundational Law Examination, the Lawyering Performance Examination, and supervised practice, to be completed inside a six-year window. An attorney who has completed more than six continuous months of active licensed practice in a United States jurisdiction within the last two years may seek an exemption from the supervised-practice component. The examinations remain. A start date written before that sequence is read is a date the sequence can still move.

Pro hac vice is the other door, and it is a door into a case. Supreme Court Rule 42 admits an out-of-state lawyer to a pending matter, with Nevada counsel, for that matter. The State Bar’s admission page is explicit that this is not admission by motion and not reciprocity. A firm that needs a partner to sign Nevada pleadings, advise Nevada clients as Nevada counsel, and stay after the case ends is hiring a licensee, not a visiting lawyer. Limited-practice certification under Supreme Court Rules 49.1 through 49.5 is a third product, used for qualifying in-house employment. It is not a partner license. Company-side hiring in the same city, including that certification, is a different book, on in-house counsel recruiting in Las Vegas.

The research map behind the nearest city is separate from the Nevada roll. Sartori maps about 23,000 lawyers in Los Angeles. The interview cohort for that city is 575, one cohort, used on Los Angeles pages that quote interviews. The State Bar’s 9,596 active attorneys and the mapped 23,000 are different cuts, in different states. The 575 are not a slice of the 9,596, and they are not a Las Vegas survey. The global map is 1,480,000+ lawyers. It is not a Clark County headcount.

Three categories cover almost every partner mandate in this city. They overlap. A firm can sit in more than one of them. None of the labels is a ranking of who to hire.

  • Nevada partnerships. The partner who moves is already, or must become, a member of the State Bar of Nevada. The restraint, if the person is an equity partner, is the partnership agreement. The client’s file is still the client’s decision under Rule 1.16(d) and, where the client has discharged the lawyer, NRS 7.055.
  • National firms with a Las Vegas office. The seat may be equity or income. The license question is the same Nevada Plan if the candidate is not already admitted here. A profit-per-equity-partner figure published for the whole firm is a worldwide or firm-wide average. It is not the Las Vegas offer.
  • Out-of-state firms that need Nevada-admitted capacity. Pro hac vice covers a case. It does not staff an office. The brief has to say whether the hire must be admitted before the first Nevada filing, or whether Nevada counsel already in the firm will sign until the new partner is licensed. Those are different clocks.

Private-practice context for the city is on legal recruitment in Las Vegas. The Los Angeles partner page, which holds the line this city borrows, is lateral partner recruiting in Los Angeles. The 20 are that line. They are not the in-house count for either city.

03 — Portability and the instrument

The client chooses. The instrument decides how soon the partner may ask.

There is no statutory notice period for a partner leaving a Nevada firm. Notice, garden leave, a non-solicit of clients, a non-solicit of staff, and a non-deal clause are whatever the agreement says. A salaried or income partner who is an employee is read under employment law. An equity partner is read under the partnership agreement. Writing one start date for both, before the agreement is open, is how a file leaves the 4 to 7 months band.

Where the person is an employee, NRS 613.195 is the noncompetition statute. A covenant is void unless it is supported by valuable consideration, imposes no restraint greater than the employer’s protection requires, imposes no undue hardship, and is proportionate to that consideration. Subsection 2 is the sentence a hiring committee should read twice. A noncompetition covenant may not restrict, and an employer may not sue to restrict, a former employee from providing service to a former customer or client if the former employee did not solicit that client, the client voluntarily chose to leave, and the former employee is otherwise inside the covenant’s limits on time, geography, and scope. Any provision that violates subsection 2 is void. Subsection 3 bars a covenant for an employee paid solely on an hourly wage, exclusive of tips. Subsection 6 tells a court that finds consideration, but unreasonable limits, to revise the covenant and enforce it as revised. The statute’s own definition, subsection 8, is an agreement between an employer and an employee. It does not say “partner.” An equity seat that is not employment sits outside that definition. The partnership agreement is then the only text that matters, and it has to be read, not assumed.

The file does not follow because the partner resigns. Rule 1.16(d) of the Nevada Rules of Professional Conduct, in effect since 1 May 2006, requires the lawyer, on termination of the representation, to protect the client: reasonable notice, time to employ other counsel, surrender of papers and property the client is entitled to, and a refund of unearned fees. The lawyer may retain papers only to the extent other law permits. NRS 7.055 is narrower and harder. It applies when the client has discharged the attorney. On demand, and on payment of the fee due, the attorney shall immediately deliver the papers, documents, pleadings, and tangible property that belong to the client or were prepared for the client. If they do not arrive, the client may move, after at least five days’ notice, for an order of production. A lateral is not automatically a discharge. It becomes one when the client says so. A non-solicit can restrain the partner from making the ask. It does not assign the instruction. Subsection 2 of NRS 613.195, where it applies, is the legislature saying the same thing for an employee: an unsolicited client who chooses to follow is not a breach of the covenant.

Of the 20 closed searches on the nearest line, 4 were Las Vegas-reporting. 2 were gaming-disputes seats, 1 was a real-estate seat, and 1 was an employment seat. The real-estate seat is the file that ran past seven months. The reason was not the compensation grid. Nevada admission and the client-notice sequence were not cleared before the offer could be signed. That is one file inside the 4, inside the 20. It is not a claim that every Las Vegas file leaves the band.

The scorecard in week one, before a name is shown to the partnership, is short.

  • Status. Equity partner, income partner, or employee with a partner title. Only the equity agreement usually carries capital and the long restraint. An income partner may be an employee, and NRS 613.195 is then the statute, including the customer-follow rule in subsection 2.
  • License. Already admitted in Nevada, or still facing the Nevada Plan that took effect on 19 January 2026. Pro hac vice does not answer the question. Limited certification under Rules 49.1 through 49.5 does not answer it either.
  • Notice. The number of months in the agreement, whether garden leave counts toward any post-exit restriction, and whether the firm can require the partner to stay away from clients during notice. There is no statutory month to insert if the clause is missing.
  • Who the clause binds the partner not to call. Clients the partner worked for, any client of the firm, or prospective clients who received a pitch. Where NRS 613.195 applies, a client who leaves without being solicited is outside the covenant even if the clause says otherwise.
  • Staff. A non-solicit of associates is often the clause that decides whether a practice arrives or a single partner arrives. Team moves are a different mandate, on team lift-out recruiting.
  • What the client will actually do. A casino operator, a developer, or a lender often stays with the firm. A client whose work sat with the partner may move, and may do so without a solicitation. Those are facts about each relationship. They are not a percentage the statute supplies.

04 — The clock

Acceptance ends the search. The agreement opens the next morning.

On the 20 closed searches of the nearest published partner line, the typical timeline from signed brief to accepted offer is 4 to 7 months. From written offer to acceptance, the median is 15 working days. A counter-offer arrived on 41 percent of those 20. Completion was 93 percent. The 15 days sit inside the search. The notice the candidate then serves sits outside it. So does the Nevada Plan, if the candidate is not already admitted.

Of those 20, 4 were Las Vegas-reporting. 1 of those 4 ran past seven months. That file was the real-estate seat. Admission and client notice were not verified in time for an offer inside the band. The other three, 2 gaming-disputes seats and 1 employment seat, are the files that did not leave the band. The 4 to 7 months remain the typical timeline of the 20. A partnership that treats every Las Vegas partner search as a 6-month exercise has not priced the file that leaves the band, and has not priced a license the candidate does not yet hold.

Demand around those seats is visible in the licensee financials, and it is not a hiring forecast. The Nevada Gaming Control Board’s Gaming Abstract for the fiscal year ended 30 June 2025, released 10 June 2026, reported Las Vegas Strip net income of $154,188,391, down 81.2 percent. Statewide casino net income was $1,697,540,577, down 34.8 percent. Statewide gaming revenue was $11,216,361,427. A drop in Strip profit is a reason a gaming-disputes book has to be read client by client. It is not a count of open partner seats, and it is not a salary.

How long a lateral partner search takes, as a method rather than as this city’s borrowed count, is on how long a lateral partner search takes. The 4 to 7 months are the Los Angeles partner line. They are not a promise that a Nevada license will be short, and they are not a promise that notice will be short.

05 — Compensation

The occupation median is not the offer, and Am Law profit is not the fee base.

O*NET’s local-wage table, sourced to Bureau of Labor Statistics 2025 wage data, puts lawyers in Las Vegas-Henderson-North Las Vegas at an annual median of $150,510. The same table puts the 90th percentile at $414,290 and the United States median at $159,670. Those are wages of employed lawyers. They are not equity profit, not a guarantee, and not the cash a partnership allocates to a lateral. The Bureau of Labor Statistics Western Information Office, in its 18 June 2026 release of May 2025 data, reissued 24 June 2026, put the mean hourly wage for legal occupations — the major group, not lawyers alone — at $71.23 in the Las Vegas area and $67.07 in the United States. Legal occupations were 0.8 percent of employment in both. The $71.23 group mean and the $150,510 lawyer median are different statistics. Neither is a partner draw.

David Lat’s 30 April 2026 recap of The American Lawyer’s 2026 Am Law 100 put calendar-2025 average profits per equity partner at $3.59 million, up 14.0 percent. That is a cohort average for equity owners of the hundred largest United States firms. It is not the profit of a Las Vegas office, and it is not the number in an offer letter. A hiring committee that has already seen $3.59 million in that recap still has to underwrite the candidate’s own collections, the firm’s own grid, and the capital the partner must introduce.

The pages that hold the rest of the arithmetic are the compensation links for this market. Lawyer salary in Nevada, 2026 is the state wage table, including the Las Vegas median of $150,510, and the explanation of what that median is not. Law firm partner compensation in 2026 is the national note on equity, non-equity, and what a published average hides. Equity and non-equity, as structures rather than as Las Vegas cells, are on equity partner salary, 2026 and non-equity partner salary, 2026. A Las Vegas offer uses those pages to see the shape of the market, then replaces the average with the agreement in front of the committee.

The retained fee is a percentage of the hire’s own year-one compensation, not of $3.59 million and not of $150,510. The fee is 25–30 percent of total first-year compensation. Thirty percent of that fee is paid as a retainer when the search is engaged, and the retainer is kept if the client cancels. For an equity seat, total first-year compensation is the amount the offer actually allocates: draw, any guarantee, and the capital the partner must introduce. Searches are retained only. The letter records the fee before anyone is called.

Hiring a partner in Las Vegas?

Read the license and the agreement before the partnership sees a name.

The letter records the fee and the retainer before any approach.

06 — How a search runs

The same six steps. The Las Vegas work is the license, the instrument, and the client’s own decision.

  1. 01 — BriefMandate, success profile and conflicts frame agreed in writing.
  2. 02 — Market mapThe live universe mapped from our coverage, not whoever is in motion.
  3. 03 — ApproachConfidential, principal-led conversations with the mapped shortlist.
  4. 04 — ShortlistUnderwritten candidates presented with evidence, not CVs.
  5. 05 — OfferPackage design, references and counter-offer defence.
  6. 06 — CloseResignation, notice and the first hundred days, managed.

The brief names the category of firm that can fill the gap, the practice, and whether the seat is equity or not. It names the conflicts the firm cannot clear. It names the license the candidate must hold on day one, which in Las Vegas means already admitted in Nevada or still on the Nevada Plan that took effect on 19 January 2026. Conflicts are checked before outreach. The approach stays blind until both sides want a conversation. Mapping uses the research programme’s map of 1,480,000+ lawyers, cut to people who have held the relevant book. The interview cohort on the nearest line is 575 structured interviews with Los Angeles partners and counsel. The 23,000 lawyers mapped in Los Angeles are the coverage figure for that city. They are not stated here as a slice of the 575, and neither figure is a Las Vegas headcount.

The offer is built against the candidate’s collections and the hiring firm’s grid. The $150,510 lawyer median and the $3.59 million Am Law average are the numbers the market will quote back. They are not the guarantee. Capital contribution, where the seat is equity, is verified before the offer is signed. Notice and the non-solicit are scheduled before the candidate resigns. A client transfer, if any client will move, waits on the client’s instruction. Where the moving lawyer is an employee, NRS 613.195(2) already tells the firm that an unsolicited client who chooses to follow is not a covenant breach. The method for the firm that is underwriting the book, including the lateral partner questionnaire and the first hundred days, stays on the partner recruiting page.

07 — One Las Vegas file

One gaming-disputes file, inside the band. The slow file is the real-estate seat.

One of the 20, and one of the 4, and one of the 2 gaming-disputes seats. It is not the 1 real-estate file that ran past seven months. The typical timeline on the 20 remains 4 to 7 months.

In the first half of 2026 a Nevada litigation firm in Las Vegas instructed a search for a gaming-disputes partner. The work list was operator disputes, licensing counseling beside trial lawyers already in the office, and a book that had to be read against the Strip’s profit drop, not against a headline win number. The file closed in 6 months. A counter-offer arrived on day 11 of the 15-day median window. The candidate was already admitted in Nevada, which is why this file did not join the real-estate seat that ran past seven months. The candidate still moved. The hiring partner at that firm later said: “The Nevada license was already in hand, and the client notice was in the offer before anyone resigned. That was the draft the partnership could sign.”

Day 11 is this file. The median on the 20 remains 15 working days. 6 months sits inside 4 to 7 months. The real-estate file is the other outcome inside the same 4: admission and client notice were not cleared in time, and the search ran past seven months. It remains one of the 20.

09 — Questions

Lateral partner recruiting in Las Vegas

What is lateral partner recruiting Las Vegas?

Lateral partner recruiting Las Vegas is a retained search for a law firm hiring a partner into a Las Vegas practice. Las Vegas has no closed-search count of its own. The nearest published partner line, Los Angeles, closed 20 partner searches over three years. The typical timeline is 4 to 7 months, and the median from offer to acceptance is 15 working days. 4 of those 20 were Las Vegas-reporting seats. A Nevada litigation firm in Las Vegas hired a gaming-disputes partner in 6 months. The parent practice is lateral partner recruiting. The city hub is legal recruitment in Las Vegas.

Which firms hire a Las Vegas partner?

Three categories, with no ranking among them. A Nevada partnership whose lawyers hold Nevada licenses. A national firm with a Las Vegas office, whose partner may already be admitted in Nevada or may still need the Nevada Plan. A firm outside Nevada that wants Nevada-admitted trial capacity rather than a string of pro hac vice admissions. Of 20 closed searches on the nearest-city partner line, 4 were Las Vegas-reporting: 2 gaming-disputes seats, 1 real-estate seat, and 1 employment seat. The State Bar of Nevada’s 2025 annual report counted 9,596 active attorneys, with 50.13 percent in Clark County and 31.44 percent out of state.

Can a departing Las Vegas partner take the book?

The client chooses. Nevada Rules of Professional Conduct 1.16(d) requires the lawyer, on termination, to surrender papers and property the client is entitled to. NRS 7.055 requires a discharged attorney, on demand and payment of the fee due, to deliver the client’s papers immediately. A noncompetition covenant, where the person is an employee, is NRS 613.195. Subsection 2 says the covenant may not stop a former employee from serving a former client who leaves voluntarily and was not solicited. An equity partner’s restraint is the partnership agreement, which that statute does not define. Across the 20 closed files on the Los Angeles partner line, a counter-offer arrived on 41 percent.

How long does a Las Vegas partner move take?

The nearest-city partner line runs 4 to 7 months from signed brief to accepted offer, with 15 working days from offer to acceptance and 93 percent completion, on 20 closed searches over three years. 4 of those 20 were Las Vegas-reporting. 1 of those 4, the real-estate seat, ran past seven months because Nevada admission and the client-notice sequence were not cleared before the offer. After acceptance, notice is whatever the current agreement requires. Nevada does not set a statutory notice period for a partner resignation. The Nevada Plan, effective 19 January 2026, is a licensing clock. It is not the search clock.

What should a Las Vegas partner offer be priced against?

Not the occupation median, and not Am Law profits per equity partner. O*NET’s republication of Bureau of Labor Statistics 2025 wage data puts lawyers in Las Vegas-Henderson-North Las Vegas at a median of $150,510. That is wage-and-salary employment. David Lat’s 30 April 2026 recap of The American Lawyer’s 2026 Am Law 100 put calendar-2025 average profits per equity partner at $3.59 million, up 14.0 percent. That average is not a Las Vegas draw. The cells, and what they leave out, are on lawyer salary in Nevada, 2026 and law firm partner compensation in 2026. The fee is 25–30 percent of total first-year compensation. Thirty percent of that fee is the retainer, kept if the client cancels.

Does a Las Vegas partner need a Nevada license before day one?

If the work is the practice of Nevada law, yes. The State Bar of Nevada states that Nevada has no reciprocity and no admission by motion. The Nevada Plan took effect on 19 January 2026, under an order filed 18 December 2025. The current bar examination continues through July 2026. A lawyer already licensed elsewhere still sits the Foundational Law Examination and the Lawyering Performance Examination. An exemption from supervised practice is available to an attorney with more than six continuous months of active licensed practice in a United States jurisdiction within the last two years. That exemption does not remove the examinations. Supreme Court Rule 42 pro hac vice is admission to a case, not a license to open a Las Vegas practice. Of the 4 Las Vegas-reporting files inside the 20, the real-estate file ran past seven months on that admission sequence.
