KölnBusiness’s insurance page describes the local book in counts. More than 50 German insurers and reinsurers have their headquarters in the city. A further 60 have a branch. The page names DEVK, Gothaer, HDI-Gerling, and DKV. More than 20 international groups keep a presence, and the page names AXA, Atradius, and General Reinsurance. The Zurich Group took a new headquarters in Cologne in 2019. The body states about 24,000 socially insured employees and about EUR 44.425 billion of premium income a year, and calls Cologne the second-largest German insurance location. The summary tile on the same page states EUR 50.22 billion of annual turnover. Premium income and turnover are different measures. Neither is a salary.
The dated employment count is the employer association’s. The Arbeitgeberverband der Versicherungsunternehmen, using a Federal Employment Agency extract with a reference date of 30 June 2025, and republished by the GDV in Fakten zur Versicherungswirtschaft 2026, counts 26,070 socially insured employees in insurance companies and intermediaries in Cologne. Munich, on the same table, has 31,770. Cologne is second. Hamburg is third at 18,530. The same series, at 30 June 2020, put Cologne at 24,550. KölnBusiness’s “about 24,000” is the round figure on its own page. The search uses 26,070 as the 30 June 2025 count.
DEVK is the mutual the KölnBusiness page names first. Its 9 June 2026 release said group gross written premiums, including reinsurance and international business, rose 7 percent in 2025 to EUR 5.75 billion. New business was EUR 1.33 billion, up 17.6 percent. DEVK is a Cologne insurer large enough to keep a standing legal function, and that release does not print a euro for the function.
DKV Deutsche Krankenversicherung AG is the health carrier on the same list, and its 2025 report changes what a search can see. Gross written premiums were EUR 5.711 billion in 2025, up 5.9 percent from EUR 5.395 billion. The company is registered in Cologne, Amtsgericht Köln HRB 570, and the statements are signed in Cologne on 23 February 2026. The same report states that the company has no employees of its own. Accounting, controlling, finance, human resources, and the Solvency II key functions, including compliance, are performed under outsourcing contracts by staff of other companies, in particular ERGO Group AG. A mandate aimed at “DKV counsel in Cologne” is aimed at a letterhead. The lawyers, where they exist, are employed by another company in that stack. The admission, the notice, and the works council follow the employing company. The Cologne registration is the carrier. The payroll is someone else’s.
The chemicals employer that publishes from Cologne is LANXESS. Its investor release of 19 March 2026, issued in Cologne, reported sales of EUR 5.673 billion in 2025, down 10.9 percent from EUR 6.366 billion. EBITDA pre exceptionals was EUR 510 million, from EUR 614 million. Net income was EUR −577 million, from EUR −177 million. Employees stood at 11,709 on 31 December 2025, from 12,338 a year earlier, 629 fewer. A counsel search against that headcount is a search in a smaller group. The brief should say whether the seat replaces someone, narrows a team, or covers a file the smaller workforce still has to staff. The release does not print a salary for counsel.
The admission stock is the chamber, and the chamber is wider than the municipal boundary. The BRAK Mitgliederstatistik, reference date 1 January 2026, counts 13,028 natural persons at the Rechtsanwaltskammer Köln, of whom 4,912 are women. Inside that figure, 2,007 hold both a Rechtsanwalt admission and a Syndikus admission (912 women), 701 are pure Syndikusrechtsanwälte (419 women), and 10,320 are admitted only as Rechtsanwalt (3,581 women). Those three admission columns add to the 13,028, and the three women’s columns add to the 4,912. Adding the dual and pure-syndicus columns gives 2,708 lawyers who hold a Syndikus admission. Nationwide the same publication counts 8,279 pure Syndikusrechtsanwälte, up 9.15 percent, inside 167,547 natural persons. BRAK’s newsletter of 15 April 2026 states those national totals. Cologne’s 701 pure syndici are the in-house pool with no parallel private-practice admission. The 2,007 dual admissions are the pool that can sign the civil pleadings a pure syndicus cannot.
The research program maps 1,480,000+ lawyers and has run a quarterly survey since 2019. The Cologne portion of that map is 8,500 lawyers. Private-practice context for the city is on legal recruitment in Cologne. The insurance seat already has its own page, in-house counsel recruiting for insurance in Cologne. A mandate whose employer, chamber, and notice are Frankfurt’s belongs on in-house counsel recruiting in Frankfurt. Company-side bands are on the Germany in-house salary page. Firm-side bands are on lawyer salary in Germany, 2026.
