Lateral partner recruiting in Brussels

A retained search for a partner moving inside two bars. The roll, the notice, and the book are three different instruments.

›Two rolls, one book, a written notice

Lateral partner recruiting Brussels places a partner who can move a client relationship across two bars, which is what legal recruiters for partners Brussels are retained to do. The French-language Brussels Bar counted 3,657 lawyers on its roll as of 1 July 2026. The Dutch-language order counted 2,755 tableau lawyers on 26 March 2026. Sartori closed 13 Brussels partner searches in the three years to 2026, on a typical timeline of 4 to 7 months. A Belgian full-service firm in Brussels hired a competition partner on an accepted offer in 22 weeks in 2025.

01 — The brief answer

The hire is a partner who can move a relationship. The city is two bars.

Lateral partner recruiting Brussels starts from the order the partner is on, not from a single national partnership market. Brussels has two bars. The French-language Brussels Bar counted 3,657 lawyers on its roll as of 1 July 2026. The Dutch-language order counted 2,755 tableau lawyers on 26 March 2026, inside a total of 4,133. A partner admitted on one roll is not, by that fact, the partner a committee needs on the other. A lawyer established in Brussels on List E is a third population. The French-language order counted 531 of them on the same 1 July 2026 date.

The work sits under lateral partner recruiting. Sartori & Partners was founded in early 2017 by Lorenzo Sartori. The Brussels network opened in 2019. The firm-wide market map is 1,480,000+ lawyers. It is the only map figure used as a firm total. Firm-wide partner conversations since 2017 are 2,600+. That figure is not split into a Brussels placement count. The Brussels research map used on this search is 4,000, with one interview cohort of 250. Across that cohort, 44 partners said the client, not the firm, decided whether the relationship moved.

Private-practice context for the city is on legal recruitment in Brussels. Partner cash that a bar has actually published, which Brussels has not, is on law firm partner salary, 2026 and law firm partner compensation in London, 2026. Those pages are not a Brussels profit. Company-side pay in the same city is on general counsel salary in Brussels, 2026 and in-house counsel salary in Brussels, 2026.

Bar rolls are the orders' own counts and are not added together. The search count and the timeline are Sartori's Brussels partner line for the three years to 2026. Completion on that line is 93 percent. The Brussels network opened in 2019.

02 — The local market

Four kinds of platform hire in this city. None of them is a ranking.

A Brussels lateral is hired into a category of firm, and the category decides what “portable” means. The first category is the international office whose Brussels work is European competition, trade, state aid, foreign-subsidy, and regulatory advice. Much of that bench is bilingual, and a material share is established under List E rather than only under the Belgian roll. The French-language order counted 531 List E lawyers and 136 List B lawyers as of 1 July 2026. The Dutch-language order, on 26 March 2026, counted 244 lawyers on its EU list and 141 on its B list. A committee that treats List E as a courtesy admission will misread who can actually sign the Brussels letterhead.

The second category is the Belgian full-service firm: corporate, finance, litigation, employment, and tax, for Belgian companies and for cross-border deals that need a Belgian law partner beside the EU file. The third is the specialist boutique, usually competition, tax, intellectual property, employment, or arbitration, where the book is the partner rather than an institutional panel. The fourth is the language line itself. A partner on the French-language roll, a partner on the Dutch-language roll, and a partner whose only Brussels foothold is List E are not substitutes. The Dutch-language order's own page, recording the 4,133 count of 26 March 2026, states that the count makes it the largest Dutch-language bar in Belgium. That is a statement about the order. It is not a ranking of firms.

The two rolls are also not a headcount of partners. The French-language order counted 937 trainees as of 1 July 2026. The Dutch-language order counted 838 trainees on 26 March 2026, and 155 honorary lawyers inside the same 4,133. Trainees and honorary lawyers are not the lateral-partner pool. Partners are a thin slice of each roll. Sartori's research map of 4,000 lawyers in Brussels is a coverage figure for the search, not a sum of the two orders, and not a substitute for the 3,657 or the 2,755.

What the orders do publish about the economics of the bar is a contribution grid, not a profit share. The French-language order's 2026 activity report says the declaration of income now uses 17 bands, previously 11, and that more than 11 percent of lawyers, excluding first- and second-year trainees, declare income below a first-year trainee. The same report says the order handles between 300 and 400 fee disputes a year, that about 75 percent of the conciliation cases resolve in the free conciliation, and that courts ask the order for an opinion on fees about 50 times a year. Those are supervision facts. They do not price a lateral partner. The city page that holds the wider market description is legal recruitment in Brussels.

03 — Portability and the covenant

The client can follow. A blanket non-compete is the wrong instrument.

Portability in Brussels is a professional rule before it is a compensation model. The Orde van Vlaamse Balies, in deontology advice 627, responding to a letter of 25 January 2019, says only a court, in a dispute, can rule on the validity of a non-compete and on how it sits with the client's free choice of lawyer. The advice treats that free choice as public order. It records Jo Stevens's reading, in Advocatuur. Regels & Deontologie (Kluwer, 2015), that the client's freedom cannot be signed away. It also records the contrary reading: the chosen lawyer may still refuse the file because of the clause, and that reading is easier to argue when a clientele was transferred for a price. The advice says the case law was then nonexistent. It does not declare every clause void, and it does not declare every clause enforceable.

The code of conduct of the Ordre des barreaux francophones et germanophone, in the French text in force on 1 September 2025, still does not write a partner non-compete of twelve months or of any other fixed length. Article 1.2 requires the lawyer to defend and advise the client in independence. Article 4.20 says the essential rules of the profession prevail over any contrary provision in the statutes or the partnership agreement, and that the bâtonnier may see those documents at any time. Article 4.31 says an organic correspondence between firms cannot impair the client's free choice. Article 4.27 says each party to an indefinite collaboration must not end it abruptly, absent a serious reason. None of those articles states a number of months for a partner.

Article 4.28, carried in the Moniteur belge of 17 January 2013, is the clause committees most often misread as a non-compete. It says the habitual collaborator of a lawyer may become counsel to a client of that lawyer only after a reasonable period following the end of the collaboration, unless the lawyer agrees, and that the collaborator must warn the former lawyer. A reasonable period is not a statutory three months and not a statutory twelve. The article is written for a collaborator, not as the exit rule for an equity partner in a company of lawyers. An equity partner's exit is the partnership agreement, read against article 4.20. Across the Brussels cohort of 250, the 44 partners who had a view on portability put the decision with the client.

Advice 705 of the Orde van Vlaamse Balies, the published PDF of which is labeled 211002 (2 October 2021), goes further for trainees. It says a non-compete in a pupillage agreement is hard to defend on deontological grounds, because free choice is public order and because the trainee is in a dependent position toward the pupil master. The advice points at the statute of 4 April 2019 on unfair terms between enterprises. It also says a court, not the bar, decides whether the clause is lawful. A partner search that includes stagiaires is therefore not covered by the partner's partnership agreement alone. The trainee instrument is article 3.9.

The employment non-compete is the instrument people import from a commercial contract, and it is the wrong one for an associé. The Federal Public Service Employment, on its page for the clause de non-concurrence, states the Act of 3 July 1978. At 1 January 2026 the clause is available only if annual gross pay exceeds EUR 44,447. Between EUR 44,447 and EUR 88,895 it is valid only if a collective agreement lists the function. Above EUR 88,895 it is valid unless a collective agreement excludes the function. It may not exceed 12 months. It may not run outside Belgium. The employer who does not waive it within 15 days of the end of the contract owes a single compensatory indemnity of at least half the worker's gross pay for the duration of the clause. If one condition fails, the clause fails. Those conditions attach to an employment contract. A Brussels partner who is an associé in a company of lawyers is not in that contract. The Court of Cassation, on 26 February 2021 (ECLI:BE:CASS:2021:ARR.20210226.1N.3), held that article II.3 of the Code of Economic Law of 28 February 2013 makes freedom of enterprise public order, and that a non-compete limited in time, space, and activity is not always disproportionate when the contract was wrongfully ended by the beneficiary of the clause. That judgment is not a lawyer case. It is the general test a drafter will cite. It does not replace advice 627.

The practical underwrite is therefore three documents, in this order. First, the roll: French-language, Dutch-language, List E, or more than one. Second, the partnership agreement or collaboration agreement, which the bâtonnier is entitled to see under article 4.20, checked for a notice period and for any clause that would force the partner to refuse a client who asks. Third, the client list, separated into relationships that follow the lawyer and matters that stay with the firm because the client instructed the firm. A clause that purports to lock the client is the clause advice 627 leaves to a judge. The wider covenant note, for other jurisdictions, is partner non-compete and garden leave by jurisdiction. It does not replace the Belgian instruments above.

04 — Compensation

The bar will not print a partner profit. The offer still has to.

Article 5.5 of the code in force on 1 September 2025 forbids personal publicity that states turnover, a win rate, or the identity of clients. The order does not publish a partner-profits table. The 2026 activity report's 17 income bands are bands for the bar contribution, and the finding that more than 11 percent of lawyers, outside the first two trainee years, declare income below a first-year trainee is a distribution of declared income. It is not a lateral package, and it is not a euro range for a partner.

Where a committee needs a published partner-cash table, it has to leave Brussels. Law firm partner salary, 2026 is the equity, non-equity, and tier table built from firm-reported figures. Law firm partner compensation in London, 2026 is the nearest European page on this site with firm-printed partner profits. Equity partner salary, 2026 and profits per partner, 2026 separate the residual from the draw. Partner compensation models is the lockstep versus origination note. None of those pages is a Brussels survey, and none of their figures is reused here as a Brussels profit.

What a Brussels offer can still specify, without a bar table, is the instrument. Lockstep pays tenure. Origination credit pays the book that moves. A guarantee pays a floor while the book is tested. Article 4.20 already says the essential rules of the profession prevail over a contrary clause in the partnership agreement, so the economic deal and the professional deal are not the same document. The fee Sartori charges for the search is separate from that package. It is retained only, 25 to 30 percent of the hire's total first-year compensation. Thirty percent of that fee is paid at engagement and kept if the client cancels. Company-side cash in the same city, which is a different seat, is on general counsel salary in Brussels, 2026.

05 — Timeline

The search clock ends at acceptance. Notice starts after it.

Sartori's Brussels partner line, 13 closed searches in the three years to 2026, runs on a typical timeline of 4 to 7 months, at a 93 percent completion rate. That clock is brief to accepted offer. It is not the day the partner sits down in the new office. A Belgian full-service firm in Brussels hired a competition partner on that line: the shortlist was ready in 46 days, and the accepted offer closed in 22 weeks, in 2025. Twenty-two weeks sits inside the 4 to 7 month band. The partnership agreement on that file required 3 months' notice, and that notice ran after acceptance.

The code will not fill in a missing notice clause for a partner. Article 4.27 forbids an abrupt end to an indefinite collaboration without a serious reason, and it does not convert that duty into a number of days. Article 3.9 does write numbers, and only for trainees. As amended by the regulation of 17 February 2025, published and in force on 3 April 2025, the minimum notice is one month if given in the first six months, two months if given between the seventh and the twelfth month, and three months from the first anniversary. The first paragraph applies only to contracts signed from 3 April 2025. A team move that includes stagiaires has to calendar those months separately from the partner's 3. The group mandate is team lift-out recruiting.

The employment statute's 12-month ceiling is not a fallback for the partner. It applies when there is an employment contract and the 1 January 2026 pay gates are met: above EUR 44,447, with the collective-agreement conditions between that figure and EUR 88,895 and above EUR 88,895, an indemnity of at least half the gross pay for the duration, and a 15-day window in which the employer may waive. Using that statute to predict a Brussels partner's start date will put the start date on the wrong document. The start date is the accepted offer plus whatever notice the partnership agreement actually contains. On the competition-partner file, that second interval was 3 months.

Associates beneath the partner are a different search and a different clock. Associate and attorney recruiting is the seat below partner. Their restrictive terms, where they are collaborateurs, are articles 4.27 and 4.28. Where they are trainees on a contract signed on or after 3 April 2025, the terms are article 3.9. The French-language order's 937 trainees as of 1 July 2026, and the Dutch-language order's 838 trainees on 26 March 2026, are the pools those articles govern. They are not the partner pool of the 13 searches.

06 — How a file is run

Name the order, then the book, then the notice clause.

The retained steps are the same shape as any other partner mandate, with Brussels documents in the first week. The brief names the practice, the order, and whether List E is enough. The map is drawn from coverage the firm already holds, including the Brussels research map of 4,000, inside the firm-wide map of 1,480,000+. Outreach does not start until the conflicts frame and the notice question are written down. The shortlist on the competition-partner file was the 46-day mark. The offer sat behind it, at 22 weeks. Closing includes the contractual notice, which on that file was 3 months, and the first months in the seat. A lawyer Sartori has placed is not approached again while that lawyer remains in that seat.

Three questions have to be answered before the first call, or the later weeks are spent re-deciding them. First, which roll: the French-language roll of 3,657 as of 1 July 2026, the Dutch-language tableau of 2,755 on 26 March 2026, List E, or a combination. Second, which category of firm is hiring: an international EU office, a Belgian full-service firm, or a specialist boutique. Those platforms do not share a book. Third, which document governs the exit: the partnership agreement, article 4.28's reasonable period for a collaborator, article 3.9 for a trainee on a contract signed from 3 April 2025, or the Act of 3 July 1978 if, and only if, the person is an employee. A file that writes “garden leave” and leaves the document blank is still open when the only willing candidate's real notice would already have run.

The fee is in the letter before anyone is called. Retained only. Twenty-five to thirty percent of total first-year compensation. Thirty percent of that fee at engagement, kept if the client cancels. The completion rate on the 13 closed Brussels partner searches is 93 percent. The typical band remains 4 to 7 months. A managing partner at a Belgian full-service firm in Brussels put the notice point in one place: The partnership agreement said three months' notice. It did not stop the client from instructing the partner. It stopped the committee from treating the book as the firm's.

Competition partner, Belgian full-service firm

Brussels · one of 13 · accepted offer in 2025

Mandate
One competition partner for a Belgian full-service firm whose EU work had outgrown the partners already on the roll.
Complication
The partnership agreement required 3 months' notice. A clause in the old collaboration purported to keep former clients from instructing the partner. Advice 627 leaves that clause to a court. The clients asked anyway.
Outcome
Shortlist in 46 days. Accepted offer in 22 weeks, inside the 4 to 7 month band. The 3 months' notice ran after acceptance. The book that moved was the relationships the partner originated.

09 — Questions

Lateral partner recruiting in Brussels — common questions

Who are the best legal recruiters for partners in Brussels?

No published ranking of legal recruiters for partners in Brussels exists. A hiring partner can test the brief, the book, and the fee. The brief has to name the order and the practice. The book has to be read client by client. The fee on a Sartori search is retained only, 25 to 30 percent of first-year total compensation, with 30 percent of that fee paid at engagement and kept if the client cancels. Sartori closed 13 Brussels partner searches in the three years to 2026, at a 93 percent completion rate, on a typical timeline of 4 to 7 months.

What does lateral partner recruiting Brussels actually cover?

It is a retained search for a partner moving between firms in Brussels, or into a Brussels office from another bar. The French-language Brussels Bar counted 3,657 lawyers on its roll as of 1 July 2026, plus 937 trainees, 531 lawyers on List E, and 136 on List B. The Dutch-language order counted 4,133 lawyers on 26 March 2026, of whom 2,755 were on the tableau. Those rolls are not one census, and they are not a ranking of firms. The city hub is legal recruitment in Brussels. The method for any city is lateral partner recruiting.

Can a Brussels firm stop a departing partner from taking clients?

The client chooses the lawyer. The Orde van Vlaamse Balies, in deontology advice 627, written against a letter of 25 January 2019, treats that freedom as public order and says only a court can rule on whether a non-compete is valid. The code of conduct in force on 1 September 2025 does not set a partner non-compete of a fixed length. Article 4.28, published in the Moniteur belge on 17 January 2013, tells a habitual collaborator to wait a reasonable period before acting for a client of the former lawyer, unless that lawyer agrees. It is not a ban on practicing, and it is not written as the rule for an equity partner leaving a company of lawyers.

What notice runs before a Brussels partner can start?

The code does not write a partner notice period in months. On one Brussels file, a Belgian full-service firm hired a competition partner with the accepted offer in 22 weeks in 2025, and the partnership agreement then required 3 months' notice. Trainee contracts signed on or after 3 April 2025 are different: article 3.9 of the same code sets a minimum of one month in the first six months, two months through the first year, and three months after that. An employment-contract non-compete under the Act of 3 July 1978 is a third instrument. It does not govern an associé who is not an employee.

What does a Brussels law-firm partner earn in 2026?

The French-language order does not publish a partner-profits table. Article 5.5 of the code in force on 1 September 2025 forbids personal publicity that states turnover, a win rate, or a client's identity. The order's 2026 activity report says the contribution grid moved from 11 income bands to 17, and that more than 11 percent of lawyers, excluding first- and second-year trainees, declare income below a first-year trainee. That is a bar-dues fact. It is not a partner package. Published partner-cash pages on this site are law firm partner salary, 2026 and law firm partner compensation in London, 2026. Neither figure is a Brussels profit.

How long does a Brussels lateral partner search take, and how is it paid?

The typical timeline on Sartori's Brussels partner line is 4 to 7 months from brief to accepted offer. The shortlist on the competition-partner file arrived in 46 days, and the accepted offer in 22 weeks. Notice in the partnership agreement ran after acceptance. The fee is retained only: 25 to 30 percent of total first-year compensation. Thirty percent of that fee is paid at engagement and kept if the client cancels. The Brussels network opened in 2019. Firm-wide partner conversations since 2017 are 2,600+. That conversation count is not a Brussels placement count.
